To be honest, the only things I knew from the far Australia were Jimcoin, Brett Garsed and Frank Gambale and therefore I was really curious to see what an Aussie Death Metal band would sound like. Moreover, after reading the biography of the band and especially the touring section I was filled with quite a lot of expectations about what I was going to listen to. Add to this the many Death Metal sub-genres and you might understand why I also wondered which ranks this band would fall in.
Well, actually DAKOTA is really close to the traditional brutal Death Metal sound, with old fashioned growls, low-tuned guitars, lots of blastbeats and thrashy tempos/riffs and some groovy parts to vary the whole outcome a bit. So, we don't have to do with something innovative here nor do we have to do with something bad.
On the contrary, this record has some good, aggressive moments and some riffs reminiscent of the good old Death Metal days. However, the whole result does not turn out to be something really special in some sense. It is just pure, well and cleverly-crafted aggressive music with remarkably clear production. Hence, it will be sound for sore ears for the old fashioned deathsters but not strong enough in order to catch more people's attention. Yet, this is just the first full length release of the band and so hopefully, their potential might result in a much more powerful second full-length (and third on the whole) strike.
