PESTIS INFEROS is a 3-piece black metal band from Syracuse, New York. I could not find anywhere on the internet indicating when they were formed, but it shouldn't be too long ago since they released their debut EP digitally on April 9, 2019 and physically (300 Ltd. CDs) on June 24, 2019. "Beyond the Veil of Light" is a short EP containing approximately 25 minutes of fast-paced black metal spread into 5 songs of almost the same duration. "From Throne to Funeral" starts with the ring of an ominous bell and aggressive riffs. We then hear a melody and what sounds to be its derivatives. The blast beats are as fast as you can imagine and almost no bass is heard during the song. I believe the weak bass sound is natural to expect in the whole album because of the raw mix and production of the album.

"Within Darkness, I Dwell" continues with more crazy guitar riffs and blast beats on drums. The melody around 1:45 is pleasant to my ear and to be honest, I feel like that's the only part in the song which has some interesting drums. There is a lot more you can do on drums to make a memorable black metal song than just blasting the hell out of double kicks. "Invoking the Sigil" has the best title in the album in the sense that it fits the music: sinister and evil. I am not able to recognize the difference between the drum line and the guitar riffs of the first two minutes of this track and the first two songs. However, there is a twist at 1:55 which brings a memorable melody and I like it. This goes on for another two minutes and then another twist happens; we hear slower riffs and some evil sounds which are probably a reminder that the beast is awake upon our call to the Sigil. These sounds make you uncomfortable and the song has a dissonant ending (which is, in my opinion, the best way to finish such a song).

There is even more madness in "Fine Line of Salvation." The drums and guitars play a chaotic sound together which is really fast. This is black metal and I know we should not expect otherwise, but I personally don't like this style of songwriting. If you want to have a raw production on your music, that's totally accepted (and even appreciated in some sub-genres of black metal). You can still make memorable music even if you decide to have minimal bass sound in your tracks, but that's only possible if you have a decent drum/guitar line for your songs. Hearing loud, speedy drums and random guitar riffs is not pleasant to my ears. This is probably because of my background and my taste; I have very few favourite dissonant black metal albums.

The final track, "Poison Falling Star", is my favourite from this album. The song is written in a much more organized way than the previous tracks (except for "Invoking the Sigil", which is my other favourite): there is a riff that is evolved through the song and the drummer and the vocalist follow the changes pretty smoothly. I love the change of things around the time stamp 1:10 and that marks the most memorable part of the album for me. This song is slower and easier to digest for me, and I can tell they spent more time on writing this track. This headbanger melody and riffs go all the way to the third minute of the song and then the song changes its direction into a faster pace rhythm with an unexpected ending. The best way to end such an inauspicious album.

I'd like to read the lyrics but they did not include it in the Bandcamp page or their Facebook, and there's nothing on other websites such as metal-archives. So I'll just go ahead and assume that this is chaos worship in best case scenario! I'd like to read the lyrics to tracks 3 and 5 as I listened to them on repeat many times. Overall, this is a good, short EP in a dissonant-based theme which combines other even contradictory genres with the music (such as the doomy feel of "Poison Falling Star."
