I can imagine the mixed emotions of bands that constantly lose members, changing personnel like diapers. For real I experienced this ordeal, and I am positive that you can understand that it is no fun. On the other hand, every period has its wonders, its gifts and pleasures and there is no sign of letting that addiction go whatsoever. For the Hoogvliet origin group, EAR DANGER, it has certainly been a rugged ride through miles over miles of rocks and stones. Being a part of a Metal scene that took a lot from its British counterpart in the early 80s, they saw, took a deep breath and made it their command.

Although only released two albums very late in their career, it didn't stop them to perform and keep on clinging to their musical beliefs. The newly released "Storming The Gates" EP, featuring a fresh new set of pipes to lead the charge, a talented individual called Sander Pastoor, highlighted that there is no getting off this boat, only forward, with a Metal dream that is yet to be fully fulfilled.

So what do we have here exactly? Well, it is pretty darn simple. Devoted to the sounds and melodic nature of NWOBHM, the Dutch guys aren't afraid to display themselves as too old school. Sometimes old dogs can't be taught new tricks, I agree about that, but the old dogs at times can sure teach some of the newcomers how stuff is to be done. Heading for the less constructive end of the music, influenced a bit of BLITZKRIEG, SATAN, IRON MAIDEN, ANGEL WITCH and I would add a scrap of SAXON, "Storming The Gates" explores the roots of Traditional Metal, while swerving nicely a curveball Speed Metal. Nothing too over the top, just saying what they have to say though the music, no over indulgence. Maybe, their basic naturality is what also took them somewhat behind as there is less thrill in the music than what I expected in the first place.

The songwriting is adequate, letting you relive old times with no doubt, but sometimes I just felt that I needed more juice, enthusiasm, and it connects well with what I described in the previous paragraph. No matter the age, EAR DANGER need that fire to burn through their souls as they write material. "Storming The Gates" lacks it to some extent I'm afraid. Nonetheless, I wouldn't discourage them of coming up with songs to be whole with. "Wall Of Shields", for instance, presents a wonderful example of that so necessary energy. After the slight collapse within "Blood On The Beach", I needed something to fuel my fire and there I was, getting myself an energetic, and melodic, proto-Speed Metal, as if fusing BLITZKRIEG and IRON ANGEL as one in the same tune. Quite an improvement in comparison to the previous track, a memorable tune that could be adjusted to become an anthem, inspiring with great melodic riffs and tight rhythms. "Storming The Gates" manifested its fury nearly the same. A ripping headbanger, commanded by a main riff that is no less of a MOTORHEADish insight. Its molten-steel chorus is quite neat and the lower tone used actually breaks the usual high pitching. The song structure is slightly out of the ordinary, especially with the section after the solo that rattles things up a bit. Catchy tune that let you slide into this track time and time again.

I am pretty sure that EAR DANGER, now with a complete lineup once again, are bound for another full length release. Musically they convey the spirituality of British Metal, and they proved themselves right. But a little punch is needed.
