CONSECRATION is a Death Doom Metal band from Norwich, UK. Rememberance is a compilation covering their 8 years career.Tracks 1-8 are taken from the album "Ephemerality" out in 2014. Tracks 9-12 are taken from Demo Sessions recorded during 2011 while tracks 13-18 are taken from the 'Gut The Priest' EP recorded in 2010. They also released a DVD in 2011 called "Unhallowed".
All starts with their eight tracks albums "Ephemerlity." Track one "In Decayed Embrace" is very deep with growling bass and dissonant guitar harmonies. The drum sounds clean and pure while the rest is loud and heavy as hell. Like Daniel Bollans vocals that growls like a charm and effortlessly. The guitar is massive and cut with calm passages from time to time to make some variations through the song. We have quite inspired doom metal here. Not too much harsh and dissonant like we're used to hear in the genre. They remind me of Canada's NORILSK. Not that much vocals in this one, words are not pronounced in vain. The structure of the song is reminiscent to some WINDHAND at a certain level, while never being copycats. This song is dangerously good I really got hooked. It has the 90's Death Metal feel while being more Doom oriented.
"Buried Alive" is a two minutes interlude that's got nice energy in it and "Black Metal" elements, it serves as a bridge to cross to get to..."Echoes of the Dead." This next one is pure Death Doom. Repetitive chords and riffs to bring the listener to some tempo variation. The more the minutes are passing, the more the grief and despair is enveloping us. This song is evolutive and gets more traditional epic doom structured in the last half of the track.Reminds me of old CATHEDRAL, ENTOMBED, & PARADISE LOST, mainly for their guitar dissonant harmonies.
"The Visitant" uses clean instruments to performs an intro and after like one minute other instruments are added and creates a nice way to start this one. This is a strong headbangin' candidate we got here.Very effective , this is slow , this is effective, this is what we are here for. A nice evolutive solo is taking form near the four minute part and drive us to some more clean instruments part. This song is twelve minutes long and is offering inventive and creative passages, even almost trance state journey through the mind taking a shortcut from below and making us wish we could see the light one more time.
"The Summoning of Sufferance" . Title says it all. The first three minutes is more tempting us more in calm landscapes to reveal the real deal: the suffering is near and unavoidable. Great profound rhythm guitars are used with second guitars doing his business in the background a little to add more dimension to the song. Vocals are mostly the same growls that we are used to but we have a few original moments where its got more black metal screams higher notes. Traditional epic doom melody repetition is also used with second guitar supporting it quite well, like it should be.Nothing bad in this song. At minute nine i am pleased to hear some black metal like sweep picking. The drums got a pace kick and works a little more technically and fast. Excellent Death Doom!
"Purity Through Pain" sound quite like we're used to hear now but what's important to say from this track is that it's got a great solo part to reach the last two minutes of the song and this is cool stuff. This compilation got amazing Doom Death stuff and is a must for all old school fans.It reminded me a lot of 90's CEREMONIUM and DELIRIUM, which is a very good association. We can hear another earlier demo version of "inviting the unpure", that is very different of the final version. Also we have "Horse" that is an unreleased instrumental that's is like two minutes long that isn't that much interesting though.
...And finally as track thirteen to eighteen, we are offered the "Gut The Priest" EP. "The Vine" is an instrumental song using bass and guitar in a clean electric way and acts as a cool start for this EP. "Consecration" starts slowly preparing the fields. The structure of this song is quite basic and simple as the earlier doom death metal sounded. But we got a little surprise after the third minute: a Sabbathian riff used to make a cool duality and progression the song. This one is different than the other songs, its got his own personality.
EP's title song "Gut The Priest", is a little written like some other tracks we had the pleasure to listen to.More darker ambiances are exposed in the last half of the song with the vocals and guitar mainly. The last two minutes are more classic heavy riffing with pitch harmonics that sounded with to me.This song isn't bad but it doesn't represent the EP this well. I don't know. This compilation is amazing for who likes their metal, slow, powerful, bleak, desolate.
I didn't mention "Funeral doom" in my description but it fits pretty well too. I hope they'll work for new material soon, cause for me releasing a compilation often mean slowly going to something else or shows manifestation of lack of creativity. I hope this isn't the case!
