At The Announcement (Reissue)
Communion
For all those that don't know, Chile is a great country for Metal. My Chilean comrades and neighbors in Metal are true fanatics, and the country has legions of fans. But strangely, the contact between Brazil and Chile underground scenes is minimal. I barely hear something from those lands (although I know about Metal fans). It's a surprise to me to have in hands a band as COMMUNION. Their album "At The Announcement" is really a bone-crushing lesson.
Plain and straight: they play a Black/Thrash Metal influence by Old School Metal bands as SODOM and VENOM. But unlike some bands from the country I heard before, they don't lack musical personality. No, they have it enough to be recognized as a very good act, playing a simple and good form of the genre, but drinking a lot from the eternal source of darkness of SARCÓFAGO as well (and the band is a great and legendary name here in South America). So, be prepared for a raw and brutal flow of energy in your ears!
As many bands from South American that play into extreme Metal genres, their sound quality is truly raw and putrid. Maybe it's a try to sound in a way that "Obsessed by Cruelty" sounds. But this rawness isn't a problem, and fits on their musical work. Obviously something cleaner could have better results, but for the fans of this particular genre, it's not a problem.
This album was born in 2014, and shows a band that can play into an Old School way, but with a strong conviction that they are in the present and have the future to conquer. Let me tell you all: songs as the nasty blow called "Impalement to Destroy", the thrashing Black/Death fury show on "Secret Rites", the Metal/Punk essence of "At the Announcement" (that shows very good guitar riffs), the lesson of raw tunes on the slow paced tempos of "Consecrated to the Abyss", and the powerful and catchy harsh harmonies of "Castigation Ceremonious Verses", "Plague Outbreaks" and "Last Ordeal" are really proof of a band that has potential.
Hermanos de Chile, I really can hear your talent, and hope that "At the Announcement" is just a sample of what you can do. But a cleaner production (just a bit, without tearing apart your musical essence) can improve things.
