This review started off kind of awkward.  When I first requested this review I thought it was going to be a melodic Death Metal band, and boy was I surprised when I received a Stoner Metal album. Southern guitar licks and a nice throaty voice are definitely present here as well as songs about drinking, I mean for Christ's sake the album begins with a beer can being opened. So come along with me as I take on the adventure that is Brand New Sin.
Brand New Sin are Southern-styled Metal from a not so Southern place; Syracuse, New York being their hometown. They started out in 2001 and released a debut album, Brand New Sin, through Now or Never as well as having a lineup change after the release. They were even in the Jack Black hit movie School Of Rock. Then they signed to Century Media Records, toured with Motorhead and COC, and they are going to release Recipe For Disaster on May 30; not too bad of a start in my opinion.
Now to the album, the first thing I thought of when I heard the album after the fact that it was not melodic Death Metal and this God damn guy sounds a lot like Zakk Wylde and their music sounds a lot like Black Label Society. At this point, I wanted to just push it aside because I could not get around the similarities. Then the album just sat on my desk for a couple of days, and I decided to give it another listen, this time I got a lot more out of it. It took a couple of listens, but they are unique in their own Southern Stoner Metal way. The guitars and the drums are heavy hitting throughout the entire album. They also throw in some good slower tracks that are not too bad of a break from the faster songs.
To come to a conclusion this album is more or less your typical Stoner Metal album. The album has some uniqueness, but not a whole lot. Like I said it took a couple of listens for it to grow on me. However, if you are a fan of BLS and other such bands then this is an album that will definitely be sweet music to your ears. Make sure, if you are of age, though to have a cold beer ready for this release.
