VESSEL OF LIGHT is a Doom/Stoner band who have released this six track EP for their debut. The band is actually a super group, composed of two musicians: Dan Lorenzo (HADES, NON-FICTION, THE CURSED) and Nathan Opposition (ANCIENT WISDOM). Honestly, until I received this promo, I had not heard of them or their bands. However, if VESSEL OF LIGHT is any indication of their talent, then I'm going to enjoying checking everything out these guys have to offer.
The opening track, "Where My Garden Grows," is played with clean guitars and some trippy, filtered vocals. It is basically an intro but its interesting and it flows nicely into the next track. "Dead Flesh and Bone," opens up with a nice, fat riff that kicks the groove machine into high gear. Lorenzo really knows how to write and play some great riffs. The drumming, also played by their vocalist Opposition really lays a strong foundation by carrying the beat and providing its own catchy groove. Nathan's vocals are what you would expect from this style: clean with a stoner vibe but also very strong and energetic.
The third track, "Meant To Be," opens up with a mixture of clean guitar and some effective lead parts as well. The atmosphere generated is sinister and only grows darker once the buzzed bass and guitar kick. Nathan here works well with the lead guitar's harmonies and definitely have a Gothic/Danzig feel to them. "Descend Into Death," is the best track on the album. The main riff is crushing, dense, and bulldozes your brain. The chorus is catchy as hell too, which doesn't hurt at all. The screaming backing vocals are another highlight in the song, as well.
"Living Dead To The World," is a short but very sweet track. The riffs are huge and open, highlighting the better aspects of bands like LAMB OF GOD or PANTERA. It pairs nicely with the next, final, and title track "Vessel of Light." The riffs continue to be southern fried and the whole song reminds me of Pepper era CORROSION OF CONFORMITY. The vocals are very well done with plenty of hooks. The middle part of the song has some great screaming and riffs which keep the song moving briskly until the crushing end. All in all, this is one hell of debut album. If I have any complaints at all, I just wish it was longer. Metalheads should definitely check this album out and keep them on their radar.
