Two years after the split of The Crown, multi talented Marko Tervonen has returned with his own powerful Rock/Metal project, Angel Blake. Deeply influenced by Metallica, Danzig, Paradise Lost and Sentenced, Angel Blake moves in fresh musical paths. A solid album with new style and format; which has nothing in common with any extension of The Crown, like some people may think.
Marko Tervonen and his partners in crime, Tony Jelencovich on vocals (B-Thong, Iron Shit Snakes, Transport League), Christian Alvestam (Scar Symmetry, Unmoored) scratching the guitars, ?rjan Wressel and his bass, and last but not least, Janne Saarenp?? (The Crown) gave me a really positive impression which I honestly didn't expect.
Polychromatic, fulfilling guitar melodies; add strong, cleverly executed drumming ideas; add extra cool basslines; add oh-my-God-so-fucking-perfect-vocals; add Marko's new ideas and experience... and you get a stunning result. Bright atmospheric elements sheding some light over the melancholic wholeness. Aggressive, powerful yet at the same time not scratching your ears-vocals. Catchy, traveling tunes; surprising breakdowns, interesting lyrics and a great version of Paint it black. Yes, they did cover Rolling Stones!
Angel Blake, stylistically, fits into every musical taste but could satisfy for sure fans of Sentenced, Amorphis and so on. As regards the sound, Marko has been in charge of the entire production alone and he did an excellent job. Everything sounds fine and the track listing is also wisely selected. I enjoyed the last doomish track to death while I was struck with surprise at the vaporous ending. The melody has been graven in my mind.
The only negative point, in my opinion, was the cover artwork... I think that it has nothing to do with the content and it didn't prepossess me of what I was about to listen to. The website also sucks; they should pay more attention on how the present their work!
