Cult of Lilith - Arkanum album cover

Lilith refers to a demon figure found in Jewish scripture and in other early civilizations. There are many legends about her but in the middle ages there was a prominent folk tale about Lilith and her marriage to Asmodeus, King of the Demons. Between them they produced endless offspring that brought endless chaos. This debut EP by Cult of Lilith contains five of their chaotic offspring. "Abaddon" kicks things off with progressive groove filled metal sounds. The vocals are earth-shakingly low and the whole thing is the right mix of ominous and unsettling. It's a brutal and promising start. "Tomb of Sa'ir" features a complex rhythm section with the bass refreshingly high in the mix. This rhythmic foundation really allows the guitar work to shine. Petursson demonstrates his ability to switch up his vocals as a speech sample signals a shift to a higher pitch vocal style. The closing solo is everything you would want. It's incredibly technical but fits the song perfectly rather than just a guitarist flaunting his proficiency.

"Arkanum" mixes things up nicely, containing elements of doom metal. The guitar work is breath-taking. The slower riff really allows drummer Vagnoni to show what he can do with some impressive blast beats and double kick drumming. Hard to believe this band has only been together for just over a year. The EP contains an impressive amount of variety over these few tracks. "Detested Empress" contains a groove metal riff. "Night Hag" incorporates some jazzy bass riffing. As a whole, the ep recalls the ambition of Gorod, Enslaved and Obscura. They are certainly not afraid to take risks, attempting to fuse Black, Groove, Doom, Technical and Progressive metal. Even for the uninitiated this is nothing short of thrilling. The songs are tight and concise with the band cutting away all fat. I am excited by what this band will do next, and so should you be.
