If there is one thing I don't really understand, it's bands that only look to the past. Sometimes it seems like the members' minds are fixed on musical tendencies that are long gone. Of course one or two bands trying to bring back the more classic styles is a good thing, but when this becomes a trend, it's truly boring and disgusting, especially for old guys me. I think some younger bands forget the old guard who have already heard THE WHO, BEATLES, LED ZEPPELIN, LYNYRD SKYNYRD. I also feel like trying to imitate older styles can cost a band a lot of time and money. But, with that said, the band GREENLEAF is one of those good, rare exceptions, and their new album, "Rise Above the Meadow", is clear proof.

In spite of the musty, moldy style the band uses, their sound is abrasive, yet beautiful. There's definitely personality in what they are doing, using good vocals and guitars, along with a heavy rhythmic section. Even though their sound is tight, there is room for them to do better than what is presented heard here, because the final result of the album is really good but too rooted in the past, and in comparison to the ancient gods of rock, their music seems to be in inferior levels.

To some, the throwback sound may be a positive point, but these days, with all technology at hand, it sounds like a gross joke. You may be able to hear all the instruments clearly and the sound quality is really good overall, but the final result is a "mommy! I want to sound like those guys on the radio in the 70s"! attitude. Sorry, but it's a nonsense thing to try to do your music.

The heavy and filthy "A Million Fireflies" uses good melodies on the guitars and vocals, as does the charming and tender "Howl" witch also features good work of bass guitar and drums. The next track is the short and abrasive "Golden Throne" with its hooking melodies and tempos, "Carry Out the Ribbons" utilizes some very good guitars, especially in regard to the solos. "You're Gonna Be My Ruin" has an ironic tone to it, and the up tempo "Pilgrims" are really impressive. GREENLEAF's new album has its good points, but they need to be themselves, not a new version for those who are long gone. A good album, but overall unimpressive. Better luck next time, guys!
