Theta Healing (Through the Poison)
Last Frontier
LAST FRONTIER is an Atmospheric Heavy Metal band formed in 2005 in Naples, Italy. This is the band's second full-length release, and contains ten tracks. "Arachnophobia" is the opening song. It has an ominous opening sound and some nifty background effects that keep it riddled in mystery. The vocals are mid-range clean style for the most part, with some high peaks here and there. Color me crazy, but there are hints of older QUEENSRYCHE here for me at times, especially with the keys and other effects. "Beyond This Scene" has more of that dark, suspenseful sound and the twin guitar harmonies bring an element of IRON MAIDEN into the fold for me. You can definitely hear the influences that motivate this album. "Disharmonic Chaos" is a bit of a shorter and slower instrumental song where the powerful riff is driven by a strong rhythm section from the bass and drums. The accent notes and background effect sound like something that might come from the days of ancient Egypt, where a massive army is assembling.
"Dragonfly's Tail" is a longer track that has all of the bombast of an epic undertaking. The riff doesn't change much but it really doesn't have to in order to get the point across. The parts where the guitar and keys echo each other add some welcomed texture. The opening notes in "Lost in Confusion" mimics a sitar and chord progressions that display a regal tone, as if you were witnessing the coronation of an ancient leader where the entire city turned out to pay homage. The odd combination of major and minor keys really give it a unique sound, and while I can still hear some obvious influences I think this is the first song that wholeheartedly has its own vision. "Perdition" uses a heavy, low-end riff and high-range piano parts to provide a contrast that shows some real depth and character. The hasty quality that the album has might be strongest here; a feeling that you cannot turn away from listening to.
"The Root of his Anger" moves along slowly and cautiously, allowing the feeling of the hairs on your neck standing up to build little by little. The bomb that goes off near the end is the crescendo that you were waiting to hear and then the passage that leads to the end is the aftermath. "Visionary Maze" is the album closer. An opening haunting guitar riff and layered keys lead the way to the main riff, which is a bossy and authoritative sound that begs your compliance. Overall, this is an album I would recommend. There really is an "outer world" quality to their sound; sometimes as familiar as what you like, and other times a completely unique concerto that brings with it, sounds that you have not heard before.<
