Chuggaboom - Zodiac Arrest album cover

For people that don't know, CHUGGABOOM is a reference to a Hanna-Barbara cartoon from the sixties, it was a cartoon called ''The Perils of Penelope Pitstop'', try saying this like ten times over, I double dare you! And now CHUGGABOOM has released their new album, "Zodiac Arrest". I am always quite open to anything I listen to and I have to review, I will take the time to review as thoroughly as I can and I don't let my personal taste in music cloud my judgment. It's not easy to bypass through personal feelings and whatnot but I try to do the best that I can. They have named their style of music ''Awesomecore'', a more comical view from the many Hardcore bands out there. The titles of the songs are comical and may reference a number of things like girls, weed, sex and just being a bro.

You have a constant duality in the vocals, with a pretty high clean voice and the harsh vocals we all know from most of the hardcore bands. Actually, the harsher vocals are much better than the clean singing (sounds like the guy hasn't broke his voice yet and it's an octave higher and gets on my nerves throughout the album). Most of the songs are pretty interchangeable, no real concept on this one and it's pretty much all over the place. The lyrics are comical at best and they don't take themselves quite seriously and this hurts the overall quality of the band. I can't blame the guys for going all in on this one and trying to do something different. Musically it's not bad at all, the production might have much better but it's the best element off of this release.

It's nothing memorable, I listened to the album a number of times and don't remember anything in particular and nothing piqued my interest. The songwriting is pretty standard petty humor with the occasional vulgar words here and there. I can't say it's not original, I mean, it's a twist on a genre that hasn't evolved much in the last decade. They tried to add something different but it felt pretty flat. I enjoyed the last song because of it was a cover from THE LONELY ISLAND and thought it was the best effort on this one, probably because it wasn't something they wrote initially. I applaud the efforts from the guys from the UK to bring something different and innovative to the table but this is more than an acquired taste to a lot of the Hardcore Metal fans out there. This was a pretty big waste of my time.
