Tennessee based Thrashers DAWN PATROL released their full length "Democracy Delivered" last year independently, after releasing 2 EPs previously. The fact that the lads released this independently really caught my attention, because boy, this band does have some meat in their music. It's always great to see bands writing political themed lyrics, and with an album titled "Democracy Delivered", it sure does kick some ass in both the music and lyrics department.
The album starts with a song "Dahmer" that gives an illusion of being an instrumental initially, but soon turns into a Thrash mayhem. My initial impression is that the sound is really thick and fast at the same time, something unusual in Thrash, but the lads execute it with ease. Due to the polished production, the sound is slightly louder on both the sides of the speaker, and actually the more I listen to the songs, the more I have come to like the guitar work in the album. The riffs are both sharp and chaotic at the same time, like in the song "1984", which I personally feel as the best song on offer here, and Is sure to become a fan favorite in their live shows. The song, unsurprisingly, brings up the topic of Orwell's dark dystopian vision to great effect.
On repeated listening, I feel there are shades of SODOM in this record. The vocals are Thrashy guttural and some songs have great backing vocals making them sound a bit more anthem-ish. The drums and bass do a great work too, especially the fast paced drum work really is one of the pillars of the band's sound in my honest opinion. The great lyrics continue with the title track "Democracy Delivered" as the song brings to your notice about the atrocities and violence that has been happening in the Middle Eastern countries. No wonder, music is a great way to make political statements. And this is not to say that the music is mediocre. The riffs in this song are really juicy and headbang-able. While "The Axeman's Jazz" fails to catch my attention as it doesn't offer anything new or interesting, "Plan 9" is an interesting song, especially with its unique intro, and the main riff that resembles a bit of Scottish Celtic music, although that may sound like a bit of exaggeration, the song definitely does stand out due to its unique riffs.
"Another Useless War" brings back the theme into the forefront, while still keeping the heaviness and the riffs intact and innovative. I have mixed feelings about "No Turning Back". The song has cool headbanging riffs, but sounds a bit generic. The album ends with "Toxic Avenger", which frankly is not the most impressive song on offer, and although does sound generic, is more anthemic, and I am guessing, it is going to turn into a fan favorite in their live shows. Clocking just under 30 minutes, this debut album of these Thrashers is worth your time, especially if you are a Thrasher yourself.
