Are SCYTHE FOR SORE EYES a sight for sore... eyes..? That's why I'm here, to tell you if you should possibly, maybe, to buy or not to buy an album. I can't tell you yes or no, I can only say here's the sounds that come out and here's what I think and you should decide for yourself (there's a song at the bottom) on if you want to buy this album. Okay so here's what's up, SCYTHE FOR SORE EYES are a Progressive Rock/Metal band on Inverse Records and their new album "Dawn Of A Darker Horizon" needs to sell so read my words and maybe help them out.
Here's the thing, I can't mark them as either Rock or Metal because they kind of walk in the grey zone of "what are you?" In songs like "Feast In Lies" and "Gone Alone" and well... most the songs on this album, there's a very, very, small amount of random guttural (yes as in Death Metal) vocals. The album itself, is melodic from beginning to end, the vocals aren't very catchy and begin to sound monotone eventually, as they don't tend to change very often. Songs like "Bring The Bottle" are made entertaining by well-crafted guitar solos, but other than these solos the guitar is rather boring. What could easily pick this album up, all it needs in my opinion are more dynamic vocals. If the vocals were to offer more whether there are more of the Death Metal vocals throughout the album or the main vocals were to change tone more often, this album would be in a whole other league.
As it stands right now, this band has some way to go, but they're not a lost cause. SCYTHE FOR SORE EYES can stand to make the Progressive part of Metal and Rock entertaining again and all it will take is age. I predict this band releasing some of the best Progressive Metal in the future, this may not be the defining album, but it's a start!<
