"Necrospiritual Deathcore", come on, tell me the title of this album doesn't make you hope its some Blackened Stoner Deathcore album. AMOK, a band out of Norway, bring their version of Blackened Death Metal to your ears so you can try to understand what's going on; from beginning to end, you'll try to figure it out. As it stands with this album, it only has 2 gears. First, standard song format of verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus, and the second, absolutely unpredictable chaos.
Vocally, the album sounds like Chuck Schuldiner with the flu. Instrumentally, well, its typical chaotic Black Metal with some melodic Death riffs in there to give the album a bit of a push out of the shallow end of the pool. Something done well with this album that more bands could easily do is using samples from TV shows or movies in order to transition from section to section. This is something done throughout most the album, and something I find that helps keep the listener actually listening.
The opening song follows the standard format mentioned earlier, "Necropsy Cunt" also features a Corpsegrinder style opening scream. Since the song itself isn't much to look at (much like Corpsegrinder himself), we skip ahead a couple songs to "Channelling Black Horns," one of the most dominant songs on this album. The song cuts between Deathcore/old black metal chugging chords and Melodic Death Metal harmonies to add to the sound pool. Although the song is rather repetitive, it's still one of the stronger songs to appear on the album. The closing of the album is, by my understanding, a 3-part song called "Goatflesh Removal", that takes on a almost Stoner/Doom Metal feel to begin, before breaking into a Death Metal heavy track. In the end though, the song is pretty much typical from this album
Not a horrible album, but nothing overly fun to listen to. AMOK is a band, that in the future, could really polish what they're doing and become something special, but every band has to start developing somewhere, and this is that somewhere. Give it a chance, see if you like it, maybe keep up with the band and in the future, I believe they'll begin to surprise you.<
