You can hear and see that something is crawling in a dark alley, big red eyes, hollow and rough growling voice, and you don't even want to know what is it. That was my first impression of the "Døden Læger Alle Sår" album, by the Danish Death Metal UNDERGANG. This album passed to me through somebody else, who claimed that this is a pure garbage and he couldn't listen to it for long without getting his guts filled with disgust. Well, it intrigued me very much and I my curiosity jumped high, how bad can it be? I received some bad albums, what can get worse than that? Couple of first minutes as I hit play, I got deeply disappointed, but then things got up; it's not very bad, in fact it's quite interesting and entertaining.

Some cultural differences has to be noted while approaching to a band like this, it's different from what some people used to call Death Metal, I wouldn't call this Death Metal. From this point of view, I can understand the person whom claimed this band as a not-even-worth-a-listen.

Many Death Metal fans see bands like DEATH as the origins of Death Metal and they got used to Death Metal as a sharp vocals, heavy guitars, diverse by it's tune and more melodic approach. It's very hard to those people to understand UNDERGANG and bands as such, and it's not even fair considering that Metal is not for everyone's ear in general, for some it's not even defined as music at all.

So why wouldn't I call it Death Metal? Because my understanding of this genre is different, to me UNDERGANG sounds like a filthy, rusty Grind Metal with Death Metal riffs. The vocal performance is not clear to me, it's monotonic, low and hollow, the worst part is the same vocal technique over and over, I'm tired to hear someone just growling in to a tube. I can not say if I'm impressed or disappointed, many people like this kind of vocal technique and might see it as impressive, but I just wish to mute it down.

The guitar recording is pretty impressive, but still, as a matter of taste, it blends and fades out because of the low and dominant vocals, the distortion is very fuzzy and the tune is very low also. The drums in this album are sharp and dominant, you can hear every cymbal and drum kick in its place, considering that drum recording is one of the hardest, and it sounds like they didn't spare on this one. Another interesting dominant instrument in this album, is the bass - with full distortion and beastly low tune which sounds crazy.

In my opinion the vocal performance makes it to fall back, the monotonic performance makes every song in the album to sound the same! Between the vocal parts I actually enjoyed the music and noticed the diversity in composition, HEY! it's actually a good music! Because of this monotonic vocal character, I couldn't hear it in one piece. I had to discover, in pauses, between songs, that the album, surprisingly, has its fast and crazy parts, slow and heavy, solos, killer drum kicks and riffs.

Overall, for me, "Døden Læger Alle Sår" is not a usual Death Metal album, it has its goods and its interesting parts as much as it has parts that I can not agree with and I didn't enjoy; for this contrast point of view I can't give it more than a seven.
