Finnish wrecking crew WÖMIT ANGEL start off the new year with a bang on their newest release, the "Maggotmouth" EP. Calling it an EP might be a bit charitable, since it's made of only two new songs plus a re-recorded version of an earlier demo tune, but make no mistake; these guys make the most out of the time they have.
So how can a three song, roughly nine-minute, borderline single release leave that much of an impression in such a short time? Simple. Barely two seconds into the titular opening track, the band prove the album title to be a bit misleading. It might be called "Maggotmouth," but the listener is more likely to leave with a mouthful of broken teeth than maggots. The guitars and drums propel forward at almost ridiculous speeds to ensure maximum possible fatalities, a Punk-tinged Black Metal assault with W. Horepreacher growling as if he's either possessed or has had his vocal cords turned inside out.
Either way, pretty Metal, right? "Children of the Moon" has a more traditional (but no less ferocious) Black Metal approach, with slightly tighter musicianship and a slew of subtle underlying melodies that clash splendidly with the oppressive rhythmic battering and Horepreacher's septic vocals. "King-SM" isn't much different from the previous two tracks musically, but it's still catchy enough to dig and heavy enough to inspire plenty a mosh or two. The short break near the middle of the song has this cool part where the guitars disappear in favor of drums and some jarring screams, before getting right back into the bone-breaking swing of things.
If this EP is anything, its direct, and for a band that plays this kind of music, that's the best way to be. WÖMIT ANGEL aren't doing anything super revolutionary here, but the music is entertaining for most of the same reasons that bands like IMPALED NAZARENE and GOATWHORE are, even if they are a little less stylistically diverse. If you have a taste for raw, fast, and heavy Metal, you've come to the right place; "Maggotmouth" checks each off with emphasis.
