ENERTIA is a Heavy Metal band based out of the state of New York, United States. Formed in 1996, the band describes their music as US Power Metal. "Victim of Thought" is actually a collection of three of their earlier CDs, "Law of Three," "Momentum," and "Flashpoint." There are 24 songs here included in this review. I will include some notable tracks that I enjoyed in the review.
From the opening track, "Victim of Thought," I hear an amalgam of old school Classic Metal/Thrash with some noted NWOBHM influence. There are moments of twin guitar harmonies and riff and meter changes as well, keeping the music dynamic. Vocally I really pick up on one of their noted influences, FLOTSAM AND JETSUM. Sometimes the Metal here is more straightforward and emotional, as you can hear in the vocal delivery of "Glitch" and "Real." At other times, there is a distinctive groove and swing to the music, like we hear in "D.O.M." Call me crazy, but I also hear some early Grunge influence sometimes, particularly in the Chris Cornell vein. "Without End" is a strong track that makes good use of the bass guitar in both the backbone and melody at times. Sometimes the gentler and not quite as aggressive grooving here reminds of PANTERA. Speaking of, both covers of "Cowboys from Hell" and "Invisible" are well done, due in no small part to Scott's vocal versatility. As we move into the second CD, "Ripped Out" leads us off. I hear a lot of the same craft as in the first CD...simple riffing, a tight bass and rhythm section and keying on the power of the vocals. "And So You Fall" has a gritty bite to it, like a junkyard dog who is perennially underfed. There is some more aggression here. "Six Weeks" continues here with some alternation between moody, acoustic passages and swift, assertive ones. I also really like the lead guitar work in the instrumental "Sever the Wicked."
Though it has been fairly quiet up until this point, the band is easy to remind you of how well they can play. Overall this is an interesting and fairly traditional collection of American Heavy Metal that was indicative of the timeframe. There is a variety of sounds and approaches, most of it being led by the strong and high ranged vocalist in Scott Featherstone, and in the no-nonsense approach to the music composition. Even the shortened song titles are indicative of this. This is the kind of Metal that you do not need to overthink.
