I think we can agree that Metal bands of certain region capture their own distinctive sound; the epic, virtuosic, harmonized twin-guitar solos from Scandinavian bands, crushing riff-mastery from US bands, and sprawling, ethnic influences from Latin American bands. Bands like SUNCROWN take it one step further, drawing on talent from 6 different countries, and this January sees the realization of their second full-length effort, "You Are Not Alone".

"The Beginning is Near" comes across immediately as a beautifully-composed, multi-layered track with grand arrangements and intellectual dynamics. The intro to this track is truly something to admire, comprised solely of keyboard effects and Juliana's beautiful soprano voice. Soon enough, Darren brings to the album his commanding voice, which carries with it a uniquely powerful tonality. The word I can best use to describe it is regal. The twin vocals quickly became my favorite thing about this band. "Who are You" came off as very much a NIGHTWISH-like track, with melodic patterns and riff arrangements strongly reminiscent of "Planet Hell". I am not one of those music enthusiasts that deem learning from influences as plagiarism; I see it as more of an honoring, and I like a band even more when I hear nods towards another artist I already know and love.

I'm positive that "Primordial Call" is my favorite track on this record. From the onset, it is a staggeringly beautiful track with a truly, uplifting melody and chord pattern. Both Darren and Juliana get to show off their entire vocal range in this track and are free to vocally adventure amongst the enthralling 5 minutes and 44 seconds. "Push" is one of the faster, if not the fastest track on this record, and leans somewhat closer to Power Metal, although being careful to deviate from any notion of Speed Metal, focusing more on sweeping keyboard melodies and soaring vocal notes. I am also hearing Norwegian guitarist Sindre being put in the spotlight, showcasing his masterful lead and solo work.

With many members, nationalities and musical backgrounds I can expect an immense pool of musical ambition and knowledge; given how thoroughly impressed I was with this record (the balance between lyrical performance and vocal theatrics!) I am anxious to see what the future brings for this band.
