WINE FROM TEARS is a Doom / Death Metal band coming from Russia. The band formed in 2002 and have one release "Through The Eyes Of Mad" (BadMoodMan Music, 2009) behind them. After four year brake they`re back with "Glad To Be Dead". Lyrics based on feelings of depression, sorrow and loss are packed with an amazing musical and vocal performance.
"For Those Who Died Asleep" opens the album. It`s an piano instrumental, overlaid with noises of the nature that change halfway to the more unnatural sounds, setting the scenery for the next track. "Allergic Sun" with it`s heavy guitar riffs and growling vocals pulls you under, into the dark. Addition of clean vocals to this track gives you false sense of security and illusion that there`s light waiting on the other side. "What Are You Waiting For?" is the third track, containing great force of energy that is captivated under the heavy guitar riffs, and slow rhythm of the bass and drums, pulling you deeper down. You find yourself wanting for this track to take a turn and change into something faster, more powerful and to release captivated energy, but that just doesn`t happen. Keyboards slowly lead you further, into the new track "In Memory of the Truth". As the track progresses, it becomes faster, with quite catchy melody. Alexey Nesterov`s guttural vocals doesn`t really belong here, this track would definitely sound better sang with clean vocals. Compared to other tracks this one is definitely the lowest point of the album. "Let Me In" continues where the previous tracks stopped, with slow-paced and gloomy sound leading to unexpected energy burst as the track comes to an end, letting you to escape heaviness for a while. "Like a Fallen Leaf" pulls you back underground where you attend an incredible duel between the growling and clean vocals. Keyboards are back to lead you into a search for "The Light at the End of the World". It`s an over ten minutes long rollercoaster of a track, starting with slow rhythm, than keeps changing forth - back between faster and slower rhythm all the way through. "Silence No More" stands out of the previous tracks, mainly because it`s faster rhythm, absence of the guttural vocals and addition of female voice belonging to Elle Fatihova. It closes the album leaving you with feeling that some parts are not told, and with uncertainty that there`s more to come.
Overall, "Glad To Be Dead" is a solid album, with great guitar sections, but speaking of genres it stands more on Doom / Gothic Metal side than on Death Metal side, but I`m sure that fans of each genre can find something interesting on this album.
