Encompassing Nothingness

Tjaktjadálvve

This album will steal your hope, harden your soul, and leave you feeling nothing by the end. That’s the album title, “Encompassing Nothingness.” As the cold winds fade at the end, so does your sense of self, and you melt into the earth to become one with the void.

Brought forth by the Sweden-based multi-instrumentalist Matthew Bell, TJAKTJADÁLVVE is an Atmospheric Black Metal project now at its third full-length release. "Encompassing Nothingness" perfectly blends the sorrow of depression-tinged black metal with the coldness, thrill and melancholy of its atmospheric kind, guiding the listener through his low-paced and synth-driven scenarios. With a neat production and dreadful vocals, the musical journey that this album encloses can't reward the listener more than so." The album has four songs, and "The Solitude of Abject Darkness" is first. Within the first few bars, a deep solemn feeling sinks into your bones, and you begin to shiver from the cold. The harsh vocals are there to remind you of the pain and anguish that has become a constant in your life.

"Norrsken" is even more devastating, and the instrumentation is akin to the world crashing around you. There are melodies at times, poking through the storm clouds with rays of light, but they disappear into the darkness once again. The emotional gravity present in the song is like a giant boulder strapped to your back, weighing you further and further into despair with each passing step. "Longing" begins with the cold howl of norther winds, chilling you to the bone. Gentle, delicate synth notes provide the melody for the song, while the vocals rage over top like a deadly storm. The title track is last. Easing in slowly, with swells of synths, you suddenly feel free, as if they walls that were there before have dissolved. A thicket of rhythm guitars come in from there, and they are somber indeed.

The vocals rage like a howling wind, threatening to level mountains, and the smooth synths are emotionally laden. For me, it's like watching the end of the world from a comet strike…the same thing that killed the dinosaurs. The earth shakes violently, everything is on fire, and you watch in horror as people are instantly vaporized. Yet through it all, you remain calm, as if none of it matters. That's the juxtaposition of the song in a nutshell. This album will steal your hope, harden your soul, and leave you feeling nothing by the end. That's the album title, "Encompassing Nothingness." As the cold winds fade at the end, so does your sense of self, and you melt into the earth to become one with the void.
