THUS DEFILED is a Black Metal band from Worthing, in the county of West Sussex, which is in England. They haven't been on my radar before now, and maybe not on yours either, so a short introduction is in order. This band has been operating since 1992 and have thus far released four studio albums, 3 EPs, two demos, a split CD and a compilation album. Their latest release dates from 2017, so I can't tell you what the current status of the band is, especially as the music wasn't accompanied by any form of information. Now, about the album I am currently listening to in order to review it; "Wings of the Nightstorm (Reissue)" features the second album from THUS DEFILED (released in 1997), fully restored and remastered, with the addition two bonus tracks from 1994.

I can start by mentioning that "Wings of the Nightstorm (Reissue)" is blessed with a good sound, quite clear and rounded, although I feel that the drums could have sounded a bit stronger, or if you will, convincing. That makes listening to the music a lot more pleasing, as well as it heightens the effect it has on your earbuds and therefore your brain. It is very clear that all musicians have a good understanding of how to play their instruments, but also on how to interact in order to get the maximum effect out of their Black Metal. What does help is that vocalist Paul C. has the ability to scream, growl and grunt in different ways and in several octaves, complementing what is being played in a really good way.

Whereas the musical style definitely is Black Metal, THUS DEFILED aren't afraid to venture out into Thrash and/or Heavy metal territory when the songs demand it. That is where the real power lies within THUS DEFILED. When they go a bit slower, use a riff that is more Thrash or Heavy Metal orientated in combination with a pure Black Metal one, they add another layer of heaviness and intensity to their music. and that happens all through "Wings of the Nightstorm (Reissue)". I am pleasantly surprised by what I have been hearing THUS DEFILED play on this record, which makes it mandatory for me to give them a favourable review. Neither THUS DEFILED nor "Wings of the Nightstorm (Reissue)" will set the world alight, but it will give you just under an hour of very satisfying, well-constructed and utterly convincing Black Metal.
