Mothers
Drowned In Silver

DROWNED IN SILVER is a project from Poland, formed by (apparently) very seasoned musicians from the Black Metal and Experimental Music scene. They are to stay anonymous. According to the Bandcamp page of the album their music finds a unique balance between occult rock and trance-like expression, drawing inspiration from the spiritual intensity of artists like THE DEVIL'S BLOOD, DEAD CAN DANCE and WARDRUNA, blending the dark atmospheres of occult and doom rock with a distinct gothic touch. Well, one thing is for sure, this isn't for the faint of heart or for those with a delicate disposition. If you are not strong enough, the music that DRWONED IN SILVER plays on "Mothers" will throw you deep into despair and desolation.
The opening song "The Living Gardens" will only add to my findings, as if you decide to listen intently to all the ten minutes that the song takes to be completed, you will increasingly feel as if you are alone in a very downtrodden and bare woodland that spans many acres, preventing you from seeing a way out. "Waves Of Sorrow" may not feel as desolate, but it does have a feel of desperation, of longing for something more upbeat, whilst realising that you are unable to conjure up such feelings. Musically it all goes from very soft and subtle to rather loud and intense. But to be fair, this is more Rock than Metal in sound, more Experimental than Black in musicianship, but all put together I have to concur that all the elements are there.
I can easily describe the other three songs that are on this "Mothers" album as well, but I have an inkling that after my description of the first two you will now know if DROWNED IN SILVER is a band that you should pursue. What I do feel that I have to say is that although this goes way beyond that which I'm used to listening, I found myself being utterly intrigued and, in this case, even mesmerised by what I hear on "Mothers". Even though the songs are quite lengthy, DROWNED IN SILVER never gives you the feeling that they are too long, that the band are just trying to fill their time. No, what I hear is a band that is trying to tell you something meaningful, and they are taking their time. I therefore have to conclude that I like what DROWNED IN SILVER is bringing to me on "Mothers".
