Psychedelic Enigma

Them

Musically these guys are clearly very well versed in reading each-others minds and complementing what they do in such a way that it all sounds as coherent as superglue. It makes going through the 56 minutes of playing time that “Psychedelic Enigma” holds rather easy to endure.

For those over 50: No, this is not the band that released the song "Gloria" in the sixties (1965 to be exact). This is the Heavy Metal band with ties to the OSA and Germany. I have to admit that after having heard their debut album in 2016 I lost track of THEM. The reason of my letting go was that I thought it was another one of those bands that was trying to copy MERCYFUL FATE. Here we are some nine years later, and I have requested to review the fifth studio album of THEM called "Psychedelic Enigma". Yes, I am doing this out of my own interest and curiosity, just to be able to see and hear how the band has evolved over the years.

This is a whole other band than I remember. This version of THEM plays Power Metal with traditional Heavy Metal and proper Speed Metal parts intertwined. And as I might not know, but you as a follower of THEM surely will, this is another concept album. according to the information that has come with the music, you can compare the contents and storyline of "Psychedelic Enigma" to those as used in the movies 'The Others' (featuring Nicole Kidman) or 'The Sixth Sense' (featuring Bruce Willis). I for one can't comment, because I'm not at all familiar with those movies.

But what I can tell you is that the powerful Metal that is to be found on "Psychedelic Enigma" is quite energetic, very compelling and a little bit addictive. What that does is invite you to play the album in its entirety time and time again. Is it because it is out of worldly good? No, it's not, but it is at least very decent and solid. In fact, it has such a good foundation and such a strong structure that this is a good effort by THEM. They have the knack to make everything fit together. Musically this will remind you of a mix between NEVERMORE and METAL CHURCH, with KK Fossor as a singer that has such a clear and versatile voice that he is able to fill all the openings he's allowed to use in exactly the right way. So, kudos for him.

Musically these guys are clearly very well versed in reading each-others minds and complementing what they do in such a way that it all sounds as coherent as superglue. It makes going through the 56 minutes of playing time that "Psychedelic Enigma" holds rather easy to endure. Like I said , this is a good Metal album by a band that has done good. I'm happy for THEM.
