A Dying Light

Arson Charge

I love that ARSON CHARGE has been signed by a record company with the apt name of Anxious & Angry, as that is the main description of what the music on “A Dying Light” is portraying.

The intro "The Feeding Grounds" is a bit of an oddity in comparison with the rest of the music on "A Dying Light", the debut album Denver-based band ARSON CHARGE, featuring members of SPELLS, NATIVE DAUGHTERS, CHIEFTAN, GLASS HUMAN and LOVE ME DESTROYER. To be fair, I certainly never have heard of any of those bands before now. On their Bandcamp site they describe the music they make as a blend of Hardcore, Thrash Metal and Punk Rock. I can understand those references, but I would like to add Heavy Metal to that list, as the way that these guys approach their music writing has enough slightly Melodic references to allow that to be added. Back to the intro. The reason I called it an anomaly is due to the fact that it is filled with electronics sounds that don't match the rest of what you will hear on "A Dying Light". It really is throwing you off the scent. It has a claustrophobic feel and atmosphere, whereas the rest of the 40 minutes on offer will give you a wider spectrum to watch out for. I love that ARSON CHARGE has been signed by a record company with the apt name of Anxious & Angry, as that is the main description of what the music on "A Dying Light" is portraying. But I have to warn you that never do you get the feeling ARSON CHARGE is becoming too anxious or too angry. They know what they are experiencing, but are able to keep everything within such boundaries that they never explode or erupt in a violent way. That is also what I feel is lacking on "A Dying Light". I was hoping for some really in your face expressions, voices and/or instruments that go haywire/crazy, but that never happens. But don't make more of that as needed, as I do feel that ARSON CHARGE is a good band that writes good music. I guess I was hoping for more aggression and expression than is being displayed here. According to their Bandcamp page ARSON CHARGE is expressing their pain, disconnection, and loss that arise from abuse and self-sabotage, and those are severe, but nowhere do they get out of hand. If what they express musically on "A Dying Light" is helping them deal with those issues, that is great. For me, I just enjoy the sound they have. As a first encounter with ARSON CHARGE, I'm not disappointed at all with "A Dying Light". In fact, I'm curious how they will evolve after this.
