Back to Greysland

Grey Attack

Without reinventing Heavy Metal and Hard Rock, this German quartet created a very good full-length.

Traditional Heavy Metal is a genre that will never die, but is always evolving. From the early alchemy summoned by BLACK SABBATH, DEEP PURPLE, LED ZEPPELIN and JUDAS PRIEST, passing by the dirty mix between Metal and Punk of MOTÖRHEAD and the dirty and smoky Hard Rock of AC/DC, and finally getting on NWOBHM and its echoes on Germany and USA, the renovation on the hands of METAL CHURCH, JUDAS PRIEST (on “Painkiller” days) and NEVERMORE, the genre is always being renewed. But some prefers a ‘back-2-basics’, as the German quartet GREY ATTACK, here with its new assault, the full-length “Back to Greysland”.

The band combines Metal and Hard Rock in a way that huge influences of NWOBHM and AC/DC can be detected, adding elements that METALLICA defined on “Metallica” age, some 70’s elements (as heard clearly on “I Am - You Are”), but always depicting a personality, they use a ‘stripped off’ and ‘straight’ way into the genre, full of melodic hooks and an amazing and rebel energy. It’s hard to resist the band’s music! The sonority, even with very good definition (to the point of any single arrangement being clear to the ears), it has a filthy appeal, with an organic outfit (like they just entered the studio, set their gears and played, being recorded in this way). It’s just what their music needs to gain life and kick asses!

There are 12 excellent songs on “Back to Greysland”, and if you are a fan of Heavy Metal, hard Rock, Rock ‘n’ Roll or the fuck else will love it! “Back to Greysland” (a slow and bitter Hard ‘n’ Roll song, filled with nasty and catchy guitar riffs), “Soldiers” (these rhythms with filthy melodies are impossible to resist, and what heavy and good work is heard on bass guitar and drums), “You Turn Me On”, “We Want It All” (a tender and melodic power ballad-like moment with a heavy chorus), “Story of You”, “I Love Rock’n Roll” (it’s accessible and full of energy, a perfect live hit), “Cruising”, “The Mountain” (again fine melodies and a filthy appeal are mixed in a great way), “The Fire”, “Get Over Me” (what a bone-breaking weight!), “I Am - You Are” and “This Light” will for sure get you.

“Back to Graysland” is a fine piece of music, indeed, and GREY ATTACK’s tendency is to grow. Don’t get in their way!
