La Società degli Eterni

Tony Tears

Part Doom, part Rock, and even part Psychedelic, this was a strange album with a strange sound. I wasn’t able to connect with most of the songs at all, because of the way the vocals were delivered mostly. The music was odd as well. File this under strange.

From Bandcamp, "La Società degli Eterni" is the new work of the Genoese band, a concept album halfway between a magical pact and the search for the karmic perfection of the soul. "The songs are the result of magical practices that led us to interact with some Entities," cryptically explains guitarist Anthony 'Tears' Polidori. "The album tells the journey we have taken on an esoteric level even before on a musical level, and this also thanks to the contribution of Daniele Donini, a long-time and powerful magician."

It has ten songs, and “Spirit of the Oath” is a short mood-setter, leading to “Lost Souls in the Pit of Corruption.” It has a heavy, mid-tempo riff with meaty bass notes, and the vocals are clean, and a bit pitchy. The song also has a bit of an amateur sound to it, and the riffs are throwbacks from another era. “Angemon” pushes a bit of a PARADISE LOST old school Doom element, but the band would be better served with a more versatile vocalist in my opinion. “The World is the Game of the Dead” moves more slowly, and purposefully, and the simple riff is effective at getting some power out of the band. But from there, the transition is odd, and I question where they are headed.

“Serpents of the Great Change” pushes more melody in both the music and the vocals. From there, it transitions a bit into a magical world for a spell, and then back. I enjoyed this song a little more than the first few. “Rage of Unsaid Words” has more of a bite to it. It sounds to me like you took a time machine back to the 1970’s and are exploring the world while dropping some acid. The abrupt ending Is jarring as well. “Liturgy of the Smell” almost has a Dungeon Synth quality to it at first, and the bass parts that follow remind me of BLACK SABBATH. The fuzzy bass parts towards the end are psychedelic as well. “La Strana Casa” is a little more mellow at first, and then it begins a heavy, slow grind. Some old school keys mix in, and it takes on another throwback sound.

“Old Souls” closes the album, and it features cello, guitar, and some female vocals, all done with solemn tones. Part Doom, part Rock, and even part Psychedelic, this was a strange album with a strange sound. I wasn’t able to connect with most of the songs at all, because of the way the vocals were delivered mostly. The music was odd as well. File this under strange.
