The Forgotten West

Forsaken Rite

This was a solid listening experience, and one that I would have liked to have heard more of. There is a nice balance of melody and aggression, all tinged with Folk elements, and they pull you into their fairytale world with their brand of songwriting.

From Bandcamp, “The Forgotten West” as an EP is a collection of songs that tell a grand adventure story spanning multiple regions, times, and events. Building upon the sounds and ideas established in “The Northern Saga” (2017) it serves as the relaunch of FORSAKEN RITE and the world they intend to build intertwining metal and folk music and fantasy inspired storytelling.” The album has five songs, and the title track is first. Following some opening flute notes, it is off and running with keyboards, an energetic and sturdy riff, and the combination of clean female vocals and harsh male vocals. It crosses into the Power Metal realm at times also, especially considering that familiar gallop of drums.

“How Long is Forever?” has a gentler sound, as well as some depressive tones. When you ask the question, what it the context? Piano mixes in, and eventually come the harsh vocals to answer the question with a measure of anger. “The Storm” begins with thunder and rain, and segues into a bit of a harder sound, still with a good deal of melody, but the harsh vocals leave no doubt. The mid section is full of folk instruments, and meaty bass notes. “Fire Circle” begins with gentle flute notes, and from there, a jovial jaunt takes over until the vocals hit, then it is again somewhat melancholy sounding. The harsh vocals keep the album firmly rooted in Metal for sure.

“Call to War” closes the EP, and drums lead the sound. When harsh vocals enter, the sound is aggressive and dark, but again, the cleans keep melody on the table, even in the midst of all of the blood and slaughter. Overall, this was a solid listening experience, and one that I would have liked to have heard more of. There is a nice balance of melody and aggression, all tinged with Folk elements, and they pull you into their fairytale world with their brand of songwriting.
