Egrotants, Souffreteux, Cacochymes, Covidards

There was nice balance between the many folk instruments used on the album with the traditional guitars of Black Metal. There was a sinister quality to the music, as well as hypnotic ones, that almost beg you to enter their world, where even the strongest person might succumb to their dark charms.

The album came to me without a press sheet, and I was unable to find any information on the band from social media. Some Black Metal bands like that level of anonymousness. So, we will have to let the music do the talking here. The album has seven songs, and “Grand Marche des Covidards” is first. It enters gently, and then screams follow in the background, followed by almost jovial folk melodies. It’s an interesting combination. For me, it conjures up images of market, but in the underworld, where blood and body parts are served with a smile. “Mauvis Sang” has a few more traditional Black Metal elements, but their Folk hand remains strong. The vocals have a good deal of anger behind them as well.

“Moribond Flétri d'Orgueil” features some more of the multi-instruments within the band repertoire. The Folk elements remain strong, but there is a darker, harder edge to the music at times. “Réservement de Confortale Présence” has bagpipes in the beginning, the steady beat of drums, and low spoken words. It reminds me of someone who is spending some time along, reflecting on things. “Le Tropique du Cancer” is more of a traditional Black Metal sound, with a  rousing wall of guitars, hasty drums, and vocal screams. You also get a real sense of the band’s musicianship here, as they deftly move between meters and chords.

“Queresle des Diables sur la Savance du Mort” has a slower, more soaking sound, and it seeps in between the cracks. It takes hold, gradually overtaking your mind with its poison. Guitars play very nicely with the other instruments, in a balance that can best be described as synergy. “Le Triomphe de la Mort” closes the album with a slower and more grand sound. The folky elements are augmented with absolutely rigid harsh vocals. There is a power to the music, a hypnotic way when you listen to it. The market has turned from horrid foods to torture, and everything in your world goes black.

Overall, there was nice balance between the many folk instruments used on the album with the traditional guitars of Black Metal. There was a sinister quality to the music, as well as hypnotic ones, that almost beg you to enter their world, where even the strongest person might succumb to their dark charms.
