It’s not hard to understand the importance of CANNIBAL CORPSE as one of the most important acts to define what Death Metal must sound after the second wave of Death Metal on the end of the 80s/beginning of the 90s. The contributions done on “Eaten Back to Life”, “Butchered at Birth”, “Tomb of the Mutilated” and “The Bleeding” are still echoing today. When you combine the low grunts, technical bass playing, hooking riffs along furious drumming, the name of the quintet must be said. And their work is important to acts as the veteran quartet DEFEATED SANITY, as heard on “Chronicles of Lunacy”. But don’t get the wrong idea: they’re not copying the North American Death Metal idols.

It’s obvious that the influence exists (especially due the excellent bass playing heard on many moments, especially on “The Odour of Sanctity”), but the German is combining Death Metal, Technical Death Metal and Brutal Death Metal (pay attention to the low tunes used by the vocals on the grunts and some slower parts), and their music is a pure deliverance of what Death Metal stands for, with aggressiveness, energy and brutality flowing free from the speakers. It’s time to make the walls of your home trembles…The band brought Colin Marston (who worked with acts as GORGUTS, BLACK PESTILENCE and many others) signs the production, recordings, mixing and mastering of the “Chronicles of Lunacy”, and created something in the most traditional Death Metal way possible, just better defined (for the sake of fans understanding), and here are Danny Nelson (of MALIGNANCY) and Paulo Paguntalan (of ENCENATHRAKH, GATH ŠMÂNÊ and many others) on backing vocals of “Amputationsdrang” and “Accelerating the Rot”. And the art for the cover created by Jon Zig is truy great, sick and expresses what the quartet musically is doing.

Brutal and full of energy, combining technique and aggressiveness in their musical mix, sometimes being fast and on others slower, the quartet is able to make your ears bleed on moments as “Amputationsdrang” (pay attention to the technical playing on bass guitar and Jazz-like tempos of the drums), “The Odour of Sanctity” (another round with excellent bass playing and drumming), “Accelerating the Rot”, “Temporal Disintegration” (the abrasiveness of the guitar riffs is intense and catching), “Extrinsically Enraged”, “A Patriarchy Perverse” (very good and technical hooks can be heard on this one), “Condemned to Vascular Famine” (very good grunts, indeed) and “Heredity Violated”.

“Chronicles of Lunacy” is a very good release, but it seems that DEFEATED SANITY still has some aces in its sleeves to show.
