Cosmic Sarcophagus
Mandroid of Krypton
From their Facebook page, they self-describe as “Blackened proggy metal-punk with a raw old-school flavor and sci-fi infused lyrics. Think early METALLICA/VOICID meets THE DEAD KENNEDYs meets MAYHEM.” The album has nine songs, and “Deep Resistance” is first. Considering the speed and energy of the song, and the way the vocals are delivered, I mostly hear a mix between Thrash Metal, Hardcore, and Punk. The vocals are straightforward, mostly shouts, and are also just a bit pitchy. “The Waltz of Death” has a similar energy, and a similar sound. The band is keeping within very right genre boundaries so far.
“Cosmic Sarcophagus” has some guitar effects in the rhythms, and this time, the song leans more into Black Metal territory. There are also some more despondent sounds, coming from the vocals. “Drag Drag Sisyphus” keeps the darkness flowing, There is a slower sound, perhaps a heavier sound, and also more hopelessness, and the cadence of the vocals keep it within the Hardcore genre for me. “Fallen Angels” comes out of the gate with more melody, although it is dark and anguished. Again, you can really hear the pitchy vocals here, as they sound like wails of pain. “Asteroid Brigade” hears the now present anguish flow, with a combination of anger from the harsh vocals. The 180 is an interesting development, but at the very least, shows the band’s sense of exploration.
“Veterans of the Cosmic War” mixes in a fair amount of dissonance into the energetic riff, and hear, you get a more aggressive dose of Black Metal with the familiar “one-two” step of the riff. “Land of Ghosts” closes the album, and it has a heavy, dissonant groove. Again, the anguished vocals wails are quite pitchy, and this is getting very hard to listen to because of that. The band is energetic, but the vocals were the worst part for me. Gabriel doesn’t have a feel for where the melody should take him at times, and the music wasn’t much better. For me, it sounds like the band doesn’t have a firm identity, which normally, would be fine with me. In this case however, it just leaves the album in a bit of limbo if you will.
