The Unconsciousness of Living
Illogicist

When DEATH were still around, back in the 90's, it was clear that they were the kind of band that defines a sound for an entire genre, but it is quite amazing that to this day there are still a shitload of bands that try to pick up where they left off, at times such efforts appear to be fruitful (as in OBSCURA's "Cosmogenesis"), but for every band that succeeds in this attempt there are several that don't, and ILLOGICIST are one of those bands.
What they offer in this album is a very technocratic take on what DEATH did in "The Sound of Perseverance", they basically borrowed the writing style from that album but stripped it of all emotional depth and instead made the music even more technical in a very pointless fashion. So technically a lot gets done on the album but emotionally it is completely blank, as a result it is extremely one-dimensional. All the songs project the exact same mood and have the same purpose, so they offer no real diversity for the listener. On top of it all, the vocalist's monotonic screaming makes this notion stand out even more.
I have nothing against highly technical music, but when it's being made this way solely for the sake of being complex instead of being made this way in order to send out a message or to emphasize emotion I fail to see the point in it. Seems to be a trend in Metal in recent years, making this kind of pointlessly technical music. I for one hope it vanishes soon.
