A band from the 80’s bringing back their music to the surface once again is what we have for you today kids. It seems that obscure bands from the past are taking advantage of the easy access to recordings that we have nowadays and are removing the dust of those old tapes that were made to be worldwide hits but they never did. Why not give it another try. Remaster, remix, add a few touches and re release. You can even get the band together and record new songs and add them to the mix. Bring the flame back.
I am talking about EQUUS in case you do not notice the album cover, it has to do with horses. The band is from Canada where they like one name bands like RUSH, PILOT or TRIUMPH. The name EQUUS is also associated with a novel by author Peter Shaffer. The name of one of the band members is Peter Schaefer, so I don't know if this is “the guy” or not. Very hard to get any information as this band has no social media presence and in the press release they do not inform what each member of the band does. The album is a re-release of an album from the 80’s and I can understand why it did not catch up at that time. Is not a very good rock not even for 80’s standards. Songs like “Metal Man” and “Power Life” sounds campy as fuck and I dare to say that cause I lived that era as a young hairy teen and I can assure you that it would be the same felling then. Uninspired compositions with synthesized drums and repetitive chorus. It sounds more like KENNY LOGGINS than anything as you can hear on “Think Of You” that even has a saxophone solo. Despite nothing worth noticing so far,
I have to say that the tune that gets the prize of the best so far is “You Decide”. Still basic and campy, but with a better melody. Since this release is a collage of various sporadic works throughout the years, you notice that the sound mix changes a little and the compositions gets a little better as tracks go by as you can hear in “Mother Earth” and “If That What It Takes”. More well structured and performed songs with nicer backing vocals and I touch of BRIAN ADAMS. These last songs I could actually see working in the 80’s and perhaps today. The album ends with “A Better Life” that could be used in the Fraggle Rock show. soundtrack I am afraid to say that I was not able to capture many good things on this release despite appreciating the effort and understanding the era. I would suggest getting the guys together again and working on some better and more well thought tunes as you were able to do this a couple of times on this release. Better break away from the past in this case.
