The Foam of Despair
Mourning Dawn
From their record label’s website, “Hailing from France, the band originally started as a one man act in 2002 - creating a couple of early demos. They were a full line-up by 2005. Their music is described as Blackened doom metal - steeped in depression, melancholy and loss.” The newest album here contains seven songs, and “Tomber du temps” is first. The opening tones are low, slow, and very bass heavy, and the harsh vocals are deep and tortured. Spoken word in the band’s native language of French peppers the depressing landscape as well.
“Blue pain” is just a little faster, and a little more catchy, but that doesn’t hold back the veritable wave of angst that runs through the song. I get some PARADISE LOST vibes in the hooks. “Borrowed skin” is a lengthy eleven minutes. It opens slowly, like the walls of a dam cracking. When they can’t stand the strain anymore, the water gushes forth in waves of abjection, and torture. The longer the song lingers, the worse you feel. “Apex” has a weighted riff that is ripe with affliction. I feel like I am being tortured over and over again, waking to the same exact day, filled with pain.
“Suzerain” has a combination of melancholy tones with ample bass notes, and louder and more searing tones. “The color of waves” has heavier and more punishing tones, and it sounds like the victim is ready to pack in the towel. He lifts his voice up and musters as much consternation as he can. But his plea goes unheard. “Midnight sun” closes the album. It has a metallic sound from drums beating against something hard, giving the song an almost Industrial edge. Overall, this was an excellent album. Threads of pain, torture, failure, and abandonment came through strongest for me, and the music was wonderfully depressing but keen with torment.
