Behind Closed Doors

Vendetta

Rescued from the sands of time, this release of this North American quintet shows how the scene isn't fair.

No one could expect what happened in the early days of the 90s. After eight years of a ruling supremacy into North American (and worldwide) parades, Glam Metal reign came to a sharp and subtle ending, with giants having hard times to survive. As grunge Rock and Alternative Rock tendencies took over, many acts entered hiatuses, or just went to glory. But many good bands and releases of those days are still lying hidden, and it’s an effort to find them. One of those good promises was VENDETTA, a North American quintet from New York. And after many years, here is “Behind Closed Doors”, their first album.

The band entered on Paris Recording Studios in Long Island, NY on 1990 to record this album, having Scott Supack as sound engineer and co-producer (and who did the mixing as well), and it was remastered by Jamie King at Jamie King Audio in Winston Salem, NC. The sonority is crude, even for those days, when doing an independent recording was extremely hard. It’s good, but in a level nearer albums as “Too Fast for Love”, “Under the Blade” and others from such generation, so the full potential of the band wasn’t available.

“Behind Closed Doors” was originally released only on cassette in a limited 500 pieces, so it became extremely rare. For the fans, it’s a form of mix Glam Metal in a MOTLËY CRÜE and WHITE LION (pay attention on the ‘van halean’ guitar arrangements) way with AOR/Arena Rock accessible elements (due some excellent keyboards interventions), in a way that is usual for the second half of the 80s. But’s a pity to check that such charming and hooking form of music was left into underground for so many years.

For many, songs as “All Those Times” (excellent melodies and guitar arrangements), “Behind Closed Doors” (the contrasts between melodic AOR lines with excellent vocals and choruses), “Far Away from Home” (excellent keyboards parts), “Little Heart” (a very good accessible song with solid bass guitar and drums work, indeed), “Daddy’s Little Girl” (a silk and tender moment of the album a ballad with crushing guitars contrasting with very good pianos’ parts), “Just for a Moment” (again a song that would be a hit on the radios between 1984 and 1987), “Never Say Goodbye” (a more introspective ballad based on vocals and keyboards), “When Tomorrow Comes” and “I Stand Alone” could sound ‘outdated’, for the older ones, this album would be a considered a collection of hits on the 80s.

Today, as things cleared and Hard/Glam Metal is back, maybe it’s the moment that the VENDETTA’s guys think about a comeback. But even if does not happen, “Behind Closed Doors” stays as a very good release for the fans, and can be easily found now.
