Opus Ferox II – Mark of the Beast

Loch Vostok

This album seamlessly blends three distinct elements into a cohesive and captivating whole. The musicianship displayed is nothing short of fantastic, with each musician showcasing their talent and skill with precision and flair. The progressive heaviness of the music adds a raw and intense energy. Yet, amidst the heaviness, there is a melodically blissful quality that provides a sense of balance and harmony. It's this balance between technicality, intensity, and beauty that elevates the album to greatness, creating a listening experience that is truly unforgettable.

The second part of the Opus Ferox trilogy “Opus Ferox II – Mark of the Beast“ brings you the same level of intricate modern progressive metal, a dynamic musical orgy in chaos and order. The album develops further what the previous album “Opus Ferox – The Great Escape” did introduce. “Opus Ferox II – Mark of the Beast“ is filled with catchy chorus lines, without compromising the variety and dynamic songwriting they are known for. LOCH VOSTOK is continuing the new era presenting strong new songs with a fantastic implementation and raw energy.

“Distance Assistance” is first, and it comes out of the gate with a heavy, brutal sound that quickly incorporates some keyboard melodies. The vocalist has a great clean voice, and reminds me of Howard Jones, especially considering the level of vibrato he uses. There is also a strong balance between weight and melody in the song. “Cult Status” is more expansive, with poignant, emotional melodies in both the vocals and the music. The vocalist really shows his incredible range in the song, and the backbone is thick with structure, especially from the massive and thudding drum parts. “The Great Wide Open” has a slower and steadier groove, still high with melodies. So far, it’s all about the balance between these two things…weight tempered with harmony.

“Children of Silence” is dirtier and nastier, from a snarling guitar riff that has big fangs, but once again, it’s also about big melodic moments as the chorus delivers another catchy offering overflowing with melody. “Senses” is longest on the album, so it has plenty of time to develop. At first, harsh vocals mingle with cleans in a brutal and punishing sound, but dual harmonic leads come in to wash the filth away. The chorus offers yet another massive moment of melody, and the band seems to have a penchant for these moments, and they also shift the pacing so the listener never knows what to expect next. “Drastic Measures” sports the band’s more melodic and explorative style, with a melody that is so easy on the ears. They drive home the chorus once again with their masterful vocalist, whose voice soars.

“Just Like That” has more delicate and tender moments that are high in emotion. If you can’t feel the angst in the music and vocals, you might want to check your pulse to make sure that you are still alive. “Ancient Body Switching Ritual” closes the album, with one part brutal heaviness, one part fantastic musicianship, and one big mouthful of melody. The vocals drip with melody, the vocals with emotions, and the music with big swells amidst the rough structure underneath. Soak in those melodies, and they will turn your blackened heart red and alive once again.

This album is a masterpiece of musical craftsmanship, seamlessly blending three distinct elements into a cohesive and captivating whole.
