Here's another intriguing band on our label playing death/black metal but Serpent of Old are far more progressive and doomier in nature. It's hard to believe that this is only their debut album considering that their songs average a good 8-9 mins and they manage to do enough to keep your attention rivetted throughout. Serpent of Old from Turkey meld influences from various genres to play an absolutely mesmerizing form of predominantly death/black metal music that does so much more. The music seamlessly transitions from ambitious progressive riffing to parts that are dark and doomy, even indulging in fiery solos and doleful tunes that showcase their emotional depth. A multi-faceted beast, it keeps changing things up without betraying the true nature; everything is intuitively done and executed to perfection. It's the only way Serpent of Old are able to write songs that are almost 10 mins long and retain your interest throughout the duration. It's a complex album that you can easily get lost in without feeling disoriented. And that's reason enough for you to keep revisiting it over and over again and invariably discover new facets each time. This is a fantastic, highly accomplished album that is easily one of the highlights in recent times.
