Danzig - Deth Red Sabaoth album cover

***Maria V.: 9/10***

The black 'wolfman' is back! Glenn Danzig and his boys return to the crime scene, 6 years after his last work. After the very first listening, I felt like I was in front of the continuity of "4p"; witnessing with my own ears watching the revival of my darkest nightmares. It seems there is no discount in the guaranteed quality of his music and still remains the same song maker, dark and evil as the ebony night. The red cover, red and wicked as the 'Deth Red Sabbaoth' (whatever that means), contains Danzig's anxieties about art in general and a female figure from a Verotik dark fairytale, inviting us inside, holding a silver candlestick. The atmosphere is above all, ladies and gents.

"Hammer Of The Gods" sounds to me like a "4p" lost track, or if you prefer, a bonus one which was being kept as a priceless gem for so many years. Glenn's voice remains in a good form and I dare to say better than in the two previous albums. The production does an excellent job, emerging all the dark spots of DANZIG's characteristic sound and the whole band is ready for action. "The Revengeful" has the same angry attitude like "Dirty Black Summer" and the repetitive guitar melody is an all-time classic in Glenn's music. The refrain is transpiring as a catchy and heavy tune, being characterized by the double vocal parts with the backing vocals playing a remarkable role in the song's atmosphere. The adrenaline hits red with the next "Rebel Spirits"; this one reminds me something from Marilyn Manson cover on "Sweet Dreams" but with better structure enhancing my blood thirst. The first Glenn-esque screaming is almost a fact and the monotonous bloody riffing raises the curtain for good as the best album of 2010.

The first pompous and horny track of "Deth Red Sabbaoth", named "Black Candy", is next like claiming the scepter from "She Rides"; the leisured, slow tempo and the wicked, jiggling melody are all what I could ask for Danzig to compose for all the die-hard fans. Notice also that Danzig here is sitting behind the drums. The following "On A Wicked Night" marking Glenn's love to Johnny Cash, even if he dedicated to his departed friend, Peter Steele. What is music after all? A steady comforter when you are in need, a relying comrade to share your pain; and Glenn seems to know about pain. Pain and tripping into the long journey of life; "Deth Red Moon"captured both through Danzig's desperate wolfish growling and here I 'stand' somewhere in middle of the album. Even if it's not a particularly catchy song, is full of emotion with a massive distinct guitar sound, something that we were used to in previous DANZIG albums. "Ju Ju Bone" brings to mind a witchery craft, hoodoo and stuff a New Orleans breeze could bring through my broken window. I am afraid to look outside though; I can hear Victor's solos, I can feel Zing's guiding (light) bass, I can whisper above Kelly's drums. But still, I don't know if I am able to enter to "Night Star Hel". Let it be.

Evilness and thick atmosphere won't let me breath. This one is heavier than I expected and three songs before the end, I may not able to discover a single filler! The sneaky and sharp opening riff colorizes Glenn's voice that is quite considerate in the couple, angrier and clarion in the refrain though. "Pyre Of Souls: Infanticle" comes next like the alter ego of "How The Gods Kill" due to the similarity in the low tempo melodic line and the melancholic tenderness in Danzig's vox. Here, without lyrics and as a guide Glenn's chants being a great leader towards the album's end.The coldness of the track's atmosphere is not enough to reach our inner souls thanks to the sweetness of the guitar mellowness and the soft whisperer in our hearts. "Pyre Of Souls: Seasons Of Pain" seems to be the little brother of 'Infanticle', since the same melody continues, but with lyrics this time and the crying guitar solo. The closing "Left Hand Rise Above" keeps the standards like in every all-time-classic DANZIG album and lows the tunes like "Let It Be Captured" did, back in the 1994. Glenn, for once more you hit us down!

It's quite difficult when you consider yourself as a die-hard fan of a band / artist and watching every step made, preparing yourself for a possible failure or loss. DANZIG's previous works during 00s hadn't the same air for me, as I watch him since 1988 and I can proudly tell if something satisfies me or not. "Deth Red Sabbaoth" is without any doubt his brilliant comeback and a solid proof that the giant has not faded, only rested for a while and stroke back, stronger than before. Here you can find "Danzig" flame, "Lucifuge" wickedness, "How The Gods Kill" straightness and "4p" inspiration and all these in one package. If you had not the chance to listen to his previous albums, this is the appropriate one to remedy yourselves with something fresh. Obey the Black Master!

To be honest with you I was not expecting a new DANZIG album 5 years after the not that good "Circle Of Snakes" based on Glenn's high and 1005 evil standards. So, here we have the grand pleasure to listen to the brand new DANZIG album that came to assure me that Glenn has not devoted all his time to the Verotik comics.

With trembling hands I entered METAL TEMPLE code to the promo Afm Records (not an easy way to listen to a promo) and then I got stoned by the tone heavy guitar riff of "Hammer Of The Gods". That was a blast I tell you! The track breathes the prime DANZIG era and also features the hearty artificial harmonics we all love from "How The Gods Kill" song. Everything is just made in the old good DANZIG way; the production is super heavy, the vintage sound is as dirty as necessary to preserve the SAMHAIN / MISFITS bondage and Glenn's voice is just perfect. His growls and shouts are in to notch and I bet will wake all the memories from the chilling DANZIG debut. "The Revengeful" comes next with a nice mid-tempo groove and impressive guitar solos revealing a lurking southern layer making the result even more addictive. The album roles on with a handful of memories 'touching' the trademark prime DANZIG era featuring fresh ideas always through Glenn's evil looking glass.

"Black Candy" hits the listener with an almost doom tempo paying respect to BLACK SABBATH and giving a lesson to all the SABBATH-wannabes band what is like playing this genre. Additional artificial harmonics will haunt your dreams and bring the heavy black veil to cover everything welcoming the darkness while Glenn is singing: "Black Candy is so hard to find". "On A Wicked Night" is classic DANZIG 'ballad' that starts with clean guitars strumming that fits Glenn's vocals like a glove building a tension that finds an outlet through another killer solo. It is not a surprise that Glenn dedicated the aforementioned song to the departed Peter Steele. Moving on, there is "Deth Red Moon" and its Rock 'n' Roll feeling taking a short break from the overwhelming darkness engraining the rest of the album. This blackness is slowing re-taking the reins in "Ju Ju Bone" that will take you in New Orleans where the excess humidity builds the fitting atmosphere for the black magic sceances held during summer time (just remember "Angel Hear" movie from 1987 to understand my saying). "Night Star Hel" continues in the same vein with additional guitar work that I have to underline is simply impressive in "Deth Red Sabaoth"; from the bone breaking power chords, the tormenting vibrato until the chilling solos everything sounds fresh and yet classic DANZIG. The album closes with the two parts of "Pyre Of Souls"; the first one comprises clean guitar and piano sounds that accompany Glenn's chanting slowing releasing an arcane and death-cold breeze from the amps speakers. The second part welcomes the guitar distortion and introduces the previous main melody through the doom/heavy perspective this band has been using in the first three albums. The lead guitar literally screams in agony and eventually finds redemption during the soloing time. The tempo here is slow, repetitive and heavy supporting the trademark vocals creating images of soul eating fires illuminating the deepest and darkest pits of hell. "Left Hand Rise" is an epic album closer; the SABBATH-esque tempo Glenn combined to Glenn's expressional vocals cover everything with a dark veil reaching a climax with trademark shouting vocals raising every single hair in the back of your neck. Add all these to the killer almost clean guitar arpeggio in the back to get a full taste of DANZIG new album power!

All the DANZIG fans are served here with a classic album that can stand loud and proud besides the unholy trinity of the first albums. Without a single doubt this release will climb in the first positions of all the top of the year album lists. Glenn set aside his comic job sit down and produce an impressive album. Whoever is unknown to this band's musical whereabouts then "Deth Red Sabaoth" is the best place to begin. For the rest of us? Well we will wait for the vinyl edition to let our demons loose!
