Sweden’s Vomitrot delivers a grotesque symphony with their 2024 release "Emetic Imprecations", an album steeped in the filth and grime of death/doom metal. Vomitrot doesn’t just dabble in the macabre; they revel in it, conjuring a deeply visceral experience that bathes the listener in waves of suffocating riffs and vomitous gutturals. This LP is a masterclass in death metal’s most primal instincts, merging the grinding weight of doom with the frenetic aggression of death metal. With six tracks, "Emetic Imprecations" leaves a lasting impression as a standout record that refuses to compromise on its disgusting, yet enthralling sound.

The Hypothesis

One of the best parts of the album was how the band held some of the Progressive elements in check, and let the melody do much of the talking. There are still the hardened structures of Metal but they are tempered with hooks. I can’t say this enough…this album is all about a great balance.

What HEAVENBLACK has going for themselves is that the know how to write songs, they are quite proficient on their instruments plus they have very competent singers in Marios Kouroupis and Dimitris Varvarigos.

“Songs Against Humanity” takes THE SPIRIT to the next level and their next logical steps in the discography. I don’t see any reason why fans of the band would not enjoy this album but it’s accessible enough to grab plenty of new fans too.

All in all, ELDINGAR’s “Lysistrata,” is a step up from their debut, even if the band still struggles with some filler and balance issues. If they can get out of their own way and find more focus within their sound, their next album will probably be something truly special.

There was a contrast between the clean and harsh vocals, as well as a nice balance between the emotions of anger and despair. I loved the female vocals especially, and would have liked to have heard more of them. The album brought up conflicting feelings for me, and that is always the mark of an interesting listening experience.

Call it a personal preference, but I believe the cold harshness of the music needs vocals that match, or at least, compliment the sound. Normally, contrasts are some of the things I look for in an album. But not in Doom. The music has fangs, the vocals are just too palpable, and the songs sound too similar to one another.

I’m afraid this album just fell flat. It didn’t push any boundaries, nor use any of the other tools in the genre like clean vocals or keyboards. It was just guitar driven MeloDeath with some guitar harmonies here and there. I would encourage them to take more chances next time, because it can make their sounds more memorable.

I can also hear how well the music would translate to a live audience. 12 songs was just a little too much in terms of overstaying its welcome, but it was a good listen.

What surprises me most of all when listening to “Prey To Your Deception” is the fact that 137 never had the luxury or pleasure of being signed to any label. To me that is like the very definition of a grave injustice.

As for the music on “Heavy Metal Survivors”, it is as straight forward as an arrow. Hard driven riffs, flanked by thumping bass sounds and very inspired drumming is what SIGN OF THE JACKAL is shooting at you. it works, and it will have you interested in a heartbeat.

As for the musical direction SINNER’S BLOOD has chosen, it is Melodic Metal, with a mix of Heavy and Power Metal mixed in constantly, but also some slightly Industrial and even Gothic snippets here and there. And whilst listening to “Dark Horizons” I can only conclude that they do have their ducks in a row, as what SINNER’S BLOOD is playing is being done with a bucketload of conviction, a heap of enthusiasm, a lot of good sounding harmony vocals and an abundance of musical ability.

The thing is, when the music starts you will immediately be able to identify it as STRYPER. The way the riffing is done, the sound of the guitars, the structures of the songs and of course the very distinctive voice of Michael Sweet make sure you know who you’re listening to.
