They incorporate a lot of different sounds into their music. Their dexterous skills are high, and I would call this a new breed of Death Metal for the decade and beyond. The sky is the limit for this band.

Although many of the songs are heavy with keyboards and even piano, I am a lover of all things keys. The album was solid, and the production outstanding, but the band could work on their diversity a bit, as many of the songs were very close to one another in length.

The songs are written with care and passion and the emotional peaks are noteworthy. Perhaps the best part if the way that the band is able to maintain a high level of tension from hardened passages to more ethereal ones…it make the desperation feel even worse.

The heavy bass sound is probably the best part of the album, but who needs another FWOBM band that is afraid to deviate from the norms that began the genre many years ago. Overall, nothing special.

When I listen to the album, I get the visual of someone who has been beat down by life…someone who is on their last leg…someone who is one more blow away from going postal. Yet, within these hopeless tones, there is also just enough of a frail beauty that keeps him from pulling the trigger.

I still feel that the band is playing it too safe with this EP and their full-length before it. At this point in their career, fans are too used to what to expect from the band.

There could have been more diversity in the band’s sound...this is possible even in Doom. This album was good, but next time, I dare the band to take a few more risks. It will be worth it, and the fans will still be there.

The heavy, dissonant Sludge tones are most noticeable, followed by Progressive elements, mostly in the meter. For me, it was a dark trip through areas of my mind that I had previously kept locked away.

In My Saddest Dreams, I Am Beside You

I felt the core of the album deeply, which is the struggle with an illness that you can’t see. Although I love a happy ending, it wouldn’t have made sense here. Mental illness is one of the darker sides of life, and telling the story must have been cathartic for the band.

First, there is horror and torture, next there is nothing left of the band’s soul. The album takes you on a journey through your worst nightmares, and leaves you feeling numb at the end.

Obviously skilled, they show a maturity in songwriting ability that doesn’t come around every day. I found the album to be mysterious, intriguing, and right in my wheelhouse.

For me, the best part was that rumbling bass. Although I enjoyed what I heard, I feel the band is capable of more. That first song was a banger…if they can keep that up, they are onto something.

The one thing that I can’t quite tell is if the band’s take on these traditional Christmas songs is meant to be a mockery of Christianity, but they have talent. This was at the very least an interesting take on it.

This was a good album in terms of the band melding many modern elements into their sound. It’s one possible direction in the Metal scene today, and the band performs their brand of music with confidence, and direction. Some fans might find the heavy electronic sound to be inauthentic, but I liked it. It made the album sound full, and rich.

Four songs aren’t a lot to try to get to know a band, and in this case, it left me as a reviewer with more questions than answers. Of the four, only the final song had any real cohesion to it…the others were just odd.

It could be inexperience, or it could be being afraid to take real chances. The band is talented but needs to work in more diversity into the album. As it stands, it just sounds like another Nu-Metal/Core band that listeners just don’t need more of.

By the end of the album, the weight of the tones take effect like a constantly building buzz inside your head that slowly drives you insane. This is an example of an album that can say so much with so little sonority, and the listener can easily get swept up in it all.

For a band that says they use to specialize in Gothic Doom before shifting to “dynamic and conceptual” music, the Doomy elements still hold the band down and back. I like Doom Metal, so that is not the issue. Oddly, dynamism was one thing that was sorely lacking on the album. The riffs were too simple, and the band failed to excite me at all.

The album ran the gamut from angry and frustrated to happy and celebratory at times. We have all felt like that little girl at some point in life, and tying in this element to the music made it feel personal. The musicians were excellent, and the various shades of the story kept things interesting.

Humanity Has Failed

Taking on a concept album of this magnitude was ambitious, indeed. A couple of songs weren’t as memorable as the entire album as a whole, so the band can work on that. But the message was strong and the music was strong. Enjoy this album as I did.

Being around since 1996 and this being their 11th studio album, they have to constantly fight the urge to release songs of their past and hang onto the formulas which define their sound. But they fight this hard, and the result is an excellent combination of Progressive elements with melodic ones.

Dwelling Below

Phillistine, vulgar and diseased. These are three words that come to mind when describing the album. It’s like the secret that you keep buried in your basement. Every day that passes, you grow more and more guilty for what you did, and the disease takes root, and slowly rots you from the inside out until you realize that life has no meaning, and your will to live is gone.

On Thorns I Lay

For a band who has been around for 30 years, they show no signs of slowing down. They have a formula, and it works for them and for their fans. Six songs of total dread and anguish await the listener, and by the end of the album, you feel like you lost a year in your life, or on the flip side, you gained a new perspective on how to deal with things. Either way, this was a soul-testing experience.

For me, the album sounds like the constant shifting skies during a passing series of storms. The rain falls heavy while the skies blacken, followed by periods of sunshine, and then back to storms again. What the band probably does best is not allow the listener to get too comfortable with the sound. As soon as it begins a hook, it shifts into another gear.

This was an excellent album that showed both the band’s high level of musicianship and their great ability to write memorable hooks. The best part was the level of balance they maintained of the two.

When you consider the amount of negativity that is out there it’s almost too much. Instead, you rise in the morning, pack your lunch, go to work, and worry about yourself.

Sometimes the flavor are sweet, while other times bitter, but always presented with a high level of musicianship. Not being familiar with the band before listening to this album, it is tightly wound and confidently prepared.

it is not winning any awards for musicianship or songwriting. The band has some talent, and this was obviously an early effort, where the amateur qualities come through strongest.
