Hellven
Zorza
From Bandcamp, there is only one quote to summarize the album, and it reads “an oneiric journey to a forgotten realm where you can only count on yourself.” The band hails from Poland, and The Metal Archives categorizes them as Post Metal/Black Metal. “Western Forest Rites” is the first song; a short introduction to “Night of the Werewolf.” The sound that spews forth is contentious, aggressive, and very thick. The vocals are impassioned screams and the simulated wolf howl send shivers down your spine. The werewolf hunts quietly, and kills without making a peep, all that you can see of his presence is the trail of blood he leaves behind.
“Death II” is equally as intense, with rolling drums, thick guitars, meaty bass notes and vocals that tear your flesh. If ever someone could put the concept of death into a song, this is what it would sound like. “Lunacy of Memories” has a hasty and powerful song, almost as if you are hanging on the edge of a precipice, and going over seems the tempting thing to do. If you are haunted by memories, I pity what a life that must be. “The Crown with Silver Thorns” is the first song that doesn’t come out of the gates with an immediate roar, but the clean passage is quickly followed by one. From there, frightening elements take over, and they stay in the forefront. “Zorza II” features very dark and tense tones, and the hairs raising on your back warn you that something is out there.
“Danse Macabre” is a dance of the dead, if you will. The room fills with shadows as the light is blocked from the sun, and the horrors that occur in the dark are unspeakable. You will take them to your grave. “Under the Reign of the Black Moon” is slower, and much more weighted. In fact, its massive weight threatens to crush the life from you. The vocals are declarative, as if they are telling you what atrocities are headed your way. “Journey to the End” brings the album to close, and I the end that you choose is the one you want. I agree with the band that the only person you can really count on is yourself. The song titles fit the music very well, and in my head, I conjured images of evil, torture, vile creatures, and my own demise. It was a journey like no other.
