Shadows Of The Past

This album by ZANDELLE has got a very apt title, considering that the majority of it is made up of re-recordings of songs from the early stages of their career. There are a total of 13 songs on this album and 10 of these are re-recorded versions. Of the other three, one, "Unleashed", is a previously unreleased song (originally recorded for their 2006 album "Vengeance Rising"), one, "Scream My Name" is completely brand new, and the other, "Bad Boys", is a cover of a WHITESNAKE song.
The ten re-recordings are all representative of the sound present at the band's beginning - pure, no doubt about it, Melodic Heavy Metal. Four of the songs are from their first self-titled release, and six of them are from the rare "Shadows Of Reality". So this album gives a chance to those fans that may have missed these albums the first time round to experience some of the tracks. These songs feature your more 'traditional' Metal lyrics, and Tsalikis puts his everything into singing every word. He's a man with a powerful voice, a very clean style not too dissimilar to that of Rob Halford of JUDAS PRIEST. The twin guitars gallop through the songs, producing awesome solos. "Angel" is the ballad of the album, and a fine one at that with strong emotive singing and minimal instrumentation.
"Unleashed" and "Scream My Name" have a more Power Metal feel to them, and may be the weakest songs on the album. They've still got all of ZANDELLE's trademarks, and they're both solid songs, but they just didn't shout out to me as much as the other tracks did. They're more representative of ZANDELLE's current sound, but that's not a bad thing, they're maybe just a little out of place compared to the rest of the album. The WHITESNAKE cover, "Bad Boys", might seem like an odd choice for this sort of band to cover, but they do a very decent job of it.
"Shadows Of The Past" isn't an album I'd recommend for new fans to pick up, they'd probably be better starting off with a traditional studio album. But it's definitely one for the more dedicated fans of the band. It offers the chance to hear some rarer tracks, and it's certainly worth a listen.
