Yossi Sassi & The Oriental Rock Orchestra - Prediluvian album cover

From Bandcamp, "familiar worldwide to music fans by his unique trademark signature sound, Yossi Sassi merges east & west, pioneering Oriental Rock. With 30+ years as a Producer and Composer/Arranger, as well as founding member of ORPHANED LAND & inventor of the Bouzoukitara instrument, Sassi was voted "Top Newcomer 2012" by 'Rock Hard' magazine readers, and considered for Grammy nomination submission in 2016." His newest effort has twelve songs.

"On Shoulders of Nephilim" is the first. It's a short and somber mood-setter with ominous tones backing some acoustical guitar. It rolls into "Uriel Machine," which feature some weighted accents along with the main melody. There is a climbing sequence at one point, as the song makes a final push towards the melody. "Oopart" has a funky little melody, and the Eastern influences can be heard in the music. So far, the songs are pretty short, but they are pleasing as well. "Atlantis" is a more pensive and thoughtful song, with delicate harmonies. It takes a while for the main sound to be established, but when it does, it is both somber and demonstrative. The leads are very well done also. "Armaros Fall" features Ross Jennings on vocals (HAKEN). His gentle and easy-going vocals are put to the test here, as he opens things up amidst the Progressive and Eastern elements in the song. This is a very nice fit for his wonderful vocal harmonies.

"Anelo" is another soft and delicate sound, and Yossi seems to do these types of songs quite well. The sober sounds of acoustical guitar combine with light vocal moans that seem to hang in the air. "Watchers of Lyrin" has some more meat to it. The melodies are a bit shadowy but are still present. Flute notes play well with the lead guitar, to create a crawling sound that reminds you that you are in fact being watched. "Architect of the Stars" has a more linear melody that develops nicely through the song. It wisps you away to lands beyond the sun, and relaxes you with its captivating sound. "Vision of Water" features guitar and flute in tandem at times, and other time supporting each other well. What do you see in the water?

"Kumlar" is a darker song, from the somber flute notes mostly. They are able to impart a lot of feeling in just a few notes. "Sirius" rocks with a steady sound from lead melodies and some great rhythm work. The melodies are delicate but very well done, and the song has a more hasty pace. Yossi's leads are on full display here, and he is quite the marksman on the axe. "The First Sunrise" closes the album. Close your eyes and go back to a time when you were a child and saw the first sunrise. Remember how beautiful it was, and how time seemed to stand still. This song is playing during that experience.

Overall, this was another wonderfully crafted album by YOSSI SASSI AND THE ORIENTAL ROCK ORCHESTRA. He has a feeling for what to write, and it comes through in the instruments. He is also an amazing guitarists, but he doesn't sacrifice the melody for his own gain. The song are playful, and joyous, and they just make you feel good with all of the bad in the world. Isn't that the entire point of music in the first place?
