The World Enslaved
Wreck-Defy
It's common to see bands following a stated model of music. It can be done as a beginner, but as time passes by, they must evolve to a personal approach on their musical work, because the leaders are the ones who can grow, and the followers never get anywhere. And even with the New wave of Thrash Metal taking the world, a great part of the bands are just playing 'more of the same', and it's a problem. The Canadian gang WRECK-DEFY seems to understand this teaching, because on "The World Enslaved" things are really very good.
They're a Thrash Metal act, but such label isn't fair with their musical work. The band's members have experience on names as VICIOUS RUMOURS, TRAUMA, TESTAMENT, MALEVOLENT CREATION, RIGHTEOUS PIGS, CEPHALIC CARNAGE, PESSIMIST and others, so it can be said that their personal experiences brought different elements, because some Death Metal tempos can be heard here and there, melodies inherited from US Metal and North American Power Metal of the 80's (especially in the vocals), so it's not so fair to think of the quartet in the same set of Thrash Metal bands that are extremely common. No, this album shows a band with a strong personality to show. The production worked in a way to make things clean and defined, and the main priority is to show the melodic side of their music. It's really very good, the sets of instrumental tunes are really excellent, and everything sounds great.
"Bring It All Down" shows extreme tempos and shreds on its beginning, but soon Thrash Metal essence takes control, showing excellent melodies and charming vocals (that combines aggressiveness and excellent tunes). And the same heavy load of aggressiveness permeates the guitar riffs of "Fashionably Offended", but some US Metal melodies appears clearly on many parts (and what a heavy work from bass guitar and drums). On "Obey", an introspective approach is shown, improving the melodic aspects of the song, with excellent arrangements of the guitars once more. Some accessible melodic touches can be heard on "Crushing the Coward" (along with excellent drums' arrangements), and what excellent chorus. A strong scent of classic Hard Rock is presented on "I'd Share Your Grave" (a versatile song, with a strong Country Rock influence on the outfit of it). "Moment of Clarity" shows a more classical Thrash Metal approach similar to that one used by Bay Area classic bands, with excellent guitars once more. And "Kill the Pain" is abrasive and nasty, but with a perfect balance with the melodies and weight. These songs are not the best ones, because the level of them is homogeneous, but this is just a set of songs for the first time on the album.
"The World Enslaved" is really a very good surprise, and I hope that WRECK-DEFY can keep surprising the fans in such a way.
