Worm - Foreverglade album cover

WORM is an American death/doom band from Florida. They formed in 2012 and "Foreverglade," is their third full length album. They have also released two demos. I've never heard of them before getting this promo but based on their location and album title, I was expecting some sludge infused doom. "Foreverglade" is less sludge and more gloom, which is even better for my tastes. But there is much to discover underneath this swampy depression.

First, this album sounds AMAZING. Every instrument can be heard and at just the right volume too. This is important because of the second element I want to talk about: the synths. This album has a ton of synths and if anyone thinks that won't work with this style then they are wrong. If anything, the album would be less without them because it provides an otherworldly feel to this murky doom and gives the songs even more depth, another aspect they were not low on to begin with.

There are also several crazy solos with a big Morbid Angel vibe but they sound more focused and better fit the context of the songs. Lastly, the synths coupled with the vocals lend the album a blackened feel. Who says intros have to be short? There isn't any rule that demands them to be. The intro here is actually a full length song and the title track. It serves as a great overview of the album's  style and feel.

The first minute or so is ambient synths that build up to a wretched riff with a biting tone. A slow and ominous feel its where the band settles into as the double bass ups the intensity. The vocals alternate between death growls and blackened screams, usually switching up as the music changes from riff oriented to synth focused. The song ends more death metal styled but the dismal synth tones ensure the doom marches alongside it.

"Murk Above The Dark Moor," is definitely cloudy and swampy as hell. But the low growls and searing blackened screams make it every bit as deadly. The middle portion is rumbling burner and where the vocals are barked out by a rabid entity.  The song smoothly settles into a dirge of doom before a crazy solo ends the song. "Cloaked In Nightwnds" is an eleven minute monster that does have a "night time" atmosphere.  The vocals hit hard as the drums fall on top of the dropping riffs. At times there are funeral type tones littered in between the heavier parts—-a nice effect that makes the song harrowing. The mid section is hard hitting, choppy riffs and blackened screams trading off.  The later half is leads opening portals to new dimensions before turning to crush the old ones.

"Empire Of The Necromancers," is a scary and horror fueled doom romp. The growls are unrelenting and help push the song into more open territory that allows room for more out of this word solos and synths. With the way the riffs groove out and the lead guitar smoothly coming up from under the frightening tones, this is one of the best songs on the album.  Its more melodic than the rest but still captures the atmosphere. The middle of the song is the fastest the album gets—but it doesn't last long as the synths return to bring the song back to crushing doom.

"Subaqueous Funeral," takes a much different approach.  Lush tones from synths and clean instrumentation pull the song out into a wide open melodic field. The growls/screams make a good compare/contrast movement that adds many flavors. And how solo? Its stunning and yet moving. The final track is "Centuries Of Ooze," and the beginning is filled with Whispers and keys that quickly bring the album to one of its darkest points. The darkness here is deep and easy to get lost into. The double bass snapped me out of my daze but only because it battered my head so hard. A slow melody resides behind the vocals before the drums and riffs step up their game for ample destruction. Intense doesn't begin to cover it.Clean guitar and deadly vocals create this odd but interesting movement around the 6:50 mark.

All in all, WORM's "Foreverglade" blew me away with its impressive depth and unique approach of adding atmosphere to gloomy doom.
