Midnite Masters

There is nothing wrong with what WOLFSKULL is playing on “Midnite Masters”. What will help some people is that the voice of singer Pete 9 has a similar sound as out little giant Glenn Danzig has, only with a little more variation in his timbre.

WOLFSKULL was founded in 2018 in Essen, Germany, and they are Rock band. Nothing more, nothing less. Just at the URL of their site and the names they use on Social Media and you can’t escape that fact. The only thing they could have added is that they are on the heavier side of the spectrum. In 2019 they had their first release, which was the EP “Hexum”. Their debut full-length studio album came three years later in 2022, and it was named “Ave Goddess”. Now, another three years later, in 2025, they have deemed it time give us their sophomore album “Midnite Masters”. And as they are on the heavier side of Rock it explains why we have received it at Metal Temple. Okay, the fact it is being released through Metalapolis Records might have something to do with that as well.

I find it very hard to review Rock, as it sometimes just doesn’t give me the inspiration that Metal does. The band has to be of a really high standard to impress me, and yes, sometimes that does happen. And to be fair, there is nothing wrong with what WOLFSKULL is playing on “Midnite Masters”. What will help some people is that the voice of singer Pete 9 has a similar sound as out little giant Glenn Danzig has, only with a little more variation in his timbre. But unfortunately for him I am one of those who really doesn’t like the voice of Mr. Danzig, or indeed any of the music of DANZIG. But hey, I just put that to one side and try and let the music do the talking. And I have to say, that was a lot less of an effort than I thought it would be.

Because what WOLFSKULL brings to the table is well written, well executed and has been given a proper sound, that makes it all come through my speakers in just the right way. I am enjoying what I hear, but somewhere along the line I start to lose interest, as I just have the feeling that everything I am listening to has been done in the same vein, in just one tempo, as if the click-track was stuck and the band didn’t know how to adjust it accordingly throughout “Midnite Masters”. And that is a pity, because I do feel that the quality is there, only it isn’t being let out of its cage just yet. When this does happen, like on “Mustang Baby”, my ears get aroused, my brain becomes active once again and my right foot even starts to tap along to the song. On top of that I start nodding my head and start making appreciative noises that I didn’t expect. I would like more of this, please!
