When Above...

It's been a long time since I actually listened to a good Black Metal band that can support the title of an underground band. WOLFSHADE posses a dream like sorrow that took me back to places, times and people that I had long chosen to forget.
"When Above..." is the third full length album of the French Black Metal band WOLFSHADE, the other two being "Evening Star..." (the first) and "Trouble" (the second). WOLFSHADE moves along the path of a more personal and sorrowful Black Metal that involves dreams, myths, occult and Lovecraft as its main themes. "When Above..." creates a perfect atmosphere of darkness, with stormy dark outbreaks that deepen the melancholy.
Where other bands would choose to amplify the albums feelings with various musical tricks, WOLFSHADE choose to let the voice of Kadhass do all the job. His reciting and screams empower by the dreamlike lyrics lead you into a dark maze of visions. His voice holds you tight, curious to where it will lead you in the end.Sometimes soothing, sometimes dictating and sometimes agonizing painful and very personal.
Behind the voice, a force of instruments have the sole purpose to open your soul, to help make the lyrics imprint on your imagination. As are the vocal parts very personal so is the music, it feels like Samigina started playing and Kadhaas started singing without any prior meeting and instantly the bonded, like the voice and the music needed each other.
I think that "When Above..." is a small 'black' pearl, it should be savored as such, and Black Metal fans who would like to hear something that sounds like an older age of Black Metal should try it out; a good soundtrack for a dark and lonely winter.
