First released in 2015, "Trap The Witch" is the fourth full-length album from Colombians WITCHTRAP. To get a more ample idea of whom these guys are I've scoured the interwebs for some general information and inevitably, some reviews. I was quite excited to see so many positive words about them, and the fact that they market themselves as "playing metal as close to the glorious early 80's, [...] just pure metal" was nothing less than a huge bonus. As one is expected, I started fangirling around with excitement, expecting something like an early METALLICA, a full on MOTORHEAD or some TWISTED SISTER with more aggressive elements.
First song of the album "Lemmy" is representative for the entire album, a mix of speed and trash and black. Yes, you read that correctly. The riffs were decent, somewhat catchy here and there, but once B.A.Ripper or whatever his real name is, started taking the mic, everything that I thought was good suddenly disappeared. I get high-pitched voice, I get a proper growl but this is just a very very sick (possible on cough medicine and hot toddy's) man's version of trying to make lemonade. "Power of the Maul" is nothing more than a highly repetitive riff that would have been nice if it wasn't present for the entire 5 minutes of the song. "Hard Thrashing Mania" was by far the 'best' one. Yes it doesn't have the traditional trash riffs, but it goes more into heavy metal (JUDAS PRIEST coming into mind), something that they may have more experience with.
All in all, I have no idea how so many people praised this album, calling it "blistering trash metal perfection" and comparing them to "what METALLICA would sound like if they were still good". I am a bit in shock, not fully comprehending if I am indeed an outlander or people these days are more and more into ear pain. Ripper, I hope your cold will improve in the future.
