The "New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM)" band WITCHFYNDE re-released their album "Give 'Em Hell" for 2021, an album that was originally released in 1980. In my opinion, NWOBHM is a lot like listening to classic rock, but a little heavier. I'd never heard of the genre or the band prior to listening to this album. I was born in 1989 so I became a fan of more of the 90s and early 2000s rock and metal bands. But this definitely reminds me of something I could have heard growing up with my mom raising me on a lot of rock music.

Vocalist Steve Bridges has a powerful voice - he does an intense, high-pitched scream in the title track "Give 'Em Hell." And the guitar playing from Montalo is nothing less than spectacular. The solos throughout are fun to listen to - the album as a whole is fun to listen to, even though I'm not a big fan of the genre. I think there's always something to be said for that, being able to recognize something good even if it's not your preferred genre. I particularly enjoyed the guitar at the beginning of "Unto the Ages of the Ages." I thought this song had great riffs and solos, as well as some interesting vocal delivery. I really enjoyed the ambient and echo-y effects right around the three-minute mark. This song is the longest one on the album at almost nine minutes, and a little weird, but it's probably my favorite. They seem to do a lot of experimental things with their sound in this one.

I did find that the 35 second interlude "The Devil's Gallop" was very strange and, as I'm sure I've noted before, a lot of times interludes like this don't make sense to me, especially when they don't really transition out of or into the songs around them. Also, this is the eighth song out of ten, so it's pretty far into the album to be an interlude. In fact, from this point on the album takes a weird direction that I'm not sure I enjoyed. The final song "Wake Up Screaming"has some cool parts and Montalo's talent saves it for the most part. For fans of rock and metal music from the 70s and 80s, this album will be a great one to listen to, especially since not a lot of music like this gets released now. The re-release will be a nice walk down memory lane.
