Endless Garden
Witchfinder
The French metal band, WITCHFINDER, plays a style of stoner doom akin to DOPELORD and WINDHAND. This EP, "Endless Garden," is the band's third release. It is their first with keyboardist Kevyn Raecke. In my opinion, Raecke brings a gothic horror feel to both of this EP's tracks.
Production by Haldor Grunberg is almost too clean. It is so clean that the more sludgy parts almost go unnoticed. That's not necessarily a negative point. The fuzzy guitar tone is perfect for this EP, and I hope they continue to work with him in the future.
Track one, "The Maze," starts out with a short bass solo. Immediately afterward comes a much welcome burst of warm, fuzzy guitar riffs. The riffing continues for the song's entirety, only stopping twice for effect. Toward the song's end, there is a playful lead guitar solo that fits in wonderfully with the catchy riff. Shortly after that solo ends, there is a long pause before Mostefai breaks into a fast, screechy singing style that, for me, was a major turn-off. I enjoyed the vast majority of the song, though.
The final song on this EP, "Eternal Sunset," is a ten-minute epic with some remarkable keyboard parts. Kevyn Raecke's accents make this a song to remember. Once again, we are treated to some high-quality fuzz from Stanislas Franczak. His riffing is the backbone of the song. The central riff develops nicely for the first seven minutes. After that, the beat gets faster without changing the central riff. This interlude lasts roughly a minute before returning to form. The music moves more slowly than previously established until the song's end.
It's difficult to form a solid opinion of a band after hearing a two-song EP. The presentation is of the highest quality, and these tracks are a joy to listen to. I hope they continue to develop their sound on their next full-length album, rumored to be released in the fall of 2022. I had a lot of fun listening to this release, and I look forward to sampling their back catalog.
